Romney's upward movement in Iowa continues.

He had a great trip through eastern Iowa on Thursday and Friday. He drew over 400 people here in Johnson County (the Bluest County in Iowa). That's a good sign. Here's the coverage for the event (gotta love our local little liberal paper giving the only Democrat in the room the last word in the article . . . sheez!) My wife, Laura, went to the event with two of my cousins (one, Susan Sorenson, is holding her son Randall with Mitt in the photo at the link). Mitt recognized and remembered my wife, and, after going around the rest of the table she was seated turned back to her and asked "Where's Jeff?". Pretty cool, eh? This is a political gift that not many people have. Romney's got it.

Also, former Iowa Lietenant Governor candidate (and current head of the Souixland Chamber of Commerce) Debbie Durham has endorsed Gov. Romney and will be heading up some of his efforts in GOP heavy western Iowa

Some more coverage of Romney in Iowa here, here and here.

WOW!

Evidently, you feel the momentum too! Since the $23 Million announcement... MMM readers have contributed THOUSANDS of dollars to the Mitt Romney campaign through this site.

We still have a goal of $50,000. Obviously, we can go WELL beyond that goal.

Let's make it happen! Here's what you can do:
  1. Make a donation! Even the smallest amount can help!
  2. Become a fundraiser yourself!

There’s been several dozen articles in local media outlets in the past three or four days regarding the candidates’ fundraising totals - because the FEC reports released on Sunday broke the money down by state. So instead of having to read from the local NH paper that Romney raised the most in that state or the local NV paper that Rudy raised the most there, I have sorted through the FEC reports and compiled all the data for you. I know, you can thank me later. :)

I’ll put the early primary states above the fold, and if you’re really nerdy, like I am, you can find much more information below the fold. If a candidate’s name isn’t listed, they didn’t raise anything from that particular state. And remember, these numbers may or may not tell us anything - they do not reflect the current state of the race; they are simply one ingredient with which to gauge the support of the candidates in various states. (If you want numbers from other specific states than these 5, let me know and I’ll put them in the comments section.)

Iowa
Romney outraised all other candidates combined in this state:
Romney - $40,750
McCain - $8,767
Giuliani - $8,550
T Thompson - $4,800
Brownback - $3,900
Hunter - $2,100
Paul - $450
Tancredo - $215

Nevada
Giuliani outraised all other candidates combined in NV:
Giuliani - $526,375
Romney - $397,235
McCain - $99,500
Paul - $5,500
Tancredo - $5,050
Brownback - $3,000
T Thompson - $1,000
Hunter - $600
Huckabee - $500

New Hampshire
Romney again outraised all other candidates combined in NH:
Romney - $126,450
Paul - $16,950
McCain - $13,732
Giuliani - $13,300
Hunter - $12,900
Tancredo - $6,700
T Thompson - $2,300
Brownback - $1,950
Huckabee - $1,375
Gilmore - $1,000

South Carolina
Romney - $174,525
McCain - $127,565
Giuliani - $120,650
Hunter - $18,000
Brownback - $7,612
Paul - $2,083
Huckabee - $1,350
Tancredo - $850

Florida
A close one in the Sunshine State:
Romney - $1,007,080
McCain - $999,456
Giuliani - $822,950
Paul - $39,915
Brownback - $35,194
Tancredo - $8,965
Hunter - $8,850
T Thompson - $7,600
Huckabee - $5,400

Top Fundraiser in Each State
Brownback raised the most in Kansas, as did Huckabee in Arkansas. McCain was the top money man in 7 states (AZ, DC, IL, MS, NC, ND, and VA). Giuliani was tops in 11 states (DE, HI, IN, MN, NJ, NV, NY, OK, PA, TX, and WV). Romney took the other 30 states.

Top States By Percentage of Total Money Raised

Romney
CA - 17.37%
UT - 13.94%
MA - 11.72%
TX - 5.37%
NY - 5.34%

McCain
CA - 15.37%
NY - 11.74%
AZ - 11.46%
TX - 9.15%
FL - 9.08%

Giuliani
NY - 22.32%
CA - 18.00%
TX - 16.16%
NJ - 6.87%
FL - 6.06%

Brownback
KS - 18.53%
CA - 10.26%
PA - 7.26%
NY - 7.22%
FL - 7.00%

Random Facts
Only Romney, McCain, and Giuliani raised money from all 50 states plus DC. Brownback came closest to them with 46. Gilmore wins the award for least number of states with only 14. Ron Paul surprised with money from 44 states.

Of the 30 states Romney topped in total dollars, he raised more than all the rest of the candidates combined in 21 of them: CO, GA, IA, ID, KY, LA, MA, ME, MI, MO, NH, NM, OH, OR, RI, SD, TN, UT, VT, WA, and WY. Giuliani managed to do the same in 6 of his 11 states: IN, NJ, NV, NY, OK, and WV. McCain did so in 2 of his 7: AZ and MS.

The highest percentage of money from one state award goes to Tommy Thompson, who raised 70% of his funds from WI. Gilmore was next with 61% of his money coming from VA, and Huckabee raised over 52% of his from Arkansas.

Where are all of the MSM articles talking about how all of Rudy's money is coming from liberal New Yorkers? That statement would be more true than the MSM's statements about Romney's money all coming from Mormons and Wall Street.

Optimism and warning. Words that describe our belated former President Ronald Reagan were apparent at an awards dinner last night in DC. Here's the report from the Hotline:

In a sea of Republican presidential hopefuls that invoke Reagan about as much as the average person references their mothers, receiving the Ronald Reagan award seems to be the Everest of accolades. And such was the case at last night’s Frontiers of Freedom Ronald Reagan gala, where Mitt Romney sought to channel the legendary leader’s charisma, optimism and folksy feel.

Just as Reagan did when he warned against the “unprecedented danger” of communism, Romney laced his speech with warnings of modern day foreign threats like North Korea. But, like Reagan, he also channeled optimism. As he often does, Romney invoked Reagan’s famous line that “I have seen four wars during my lifetime and none of them began because America was too strong.”

Romney also used his speech-- which he opened by praising the day’s “life affirming” Supreme Court decision-- to allude to his religious convictions (hint: they’re not unlike yours, Christian Conservatives). He referenced Isaiah when highlighting his foreign policy goals and cited Cain and Abel when talking about the Virginia Tech shootings. He also said that after hearing about the tragedy in Blacksburg, “the first thing I did was pick up my bible.”

Speaking before a room full of black-and-white tuxedos, Romney’s speech was, fittingly, a study in contrasts: He spoke of life and death, good and evil, small vs. big. And for a candidate who’s plagued by accusations of policy shifts and flips flops, he wanted to make one thing certain: he’s the Reagan candidate. And he’s prepared to make as many Peggy Noonan or “Shining City” references as it takes, till they believe him. [NORA MCALVANAH]

Yesterday, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani praised
<http://hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com/archives/2007/04/rudy_decision_w
.html> the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the ban on partial-birth
abortion. As many pointed out, this was a reversal
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giZx5i3Ntv0> of his previous position.

Many have probably forgotten that in 1996, then-Mayor Giuliani got into
a public dispute over the issue with Pope John Paul II.

Here's the story: After President Clinton vetoed a ban on partial-birth
abortions, Pope John Paul II condemned Clinton's veto as "a shameful
veto that in practice is equivalent to an incredibly brutal act of
aggression against innocent humans."

As the New York Times reported on April 22, 1996,
<http://select.nytimes.com/search/restricted/article?res=F20917FA345D0C7
18EDDAD0894DE494D81> Giuliani defended Clinton -- and criticized Pope
John Paul II, and Cardinal O'Connor:

"Critics of the Pope's statements, including Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani,
questioned last week whether the church should issue opinions on
political matters.

"It is a not-so-clever way of trying to muzzle the church," the Cardinal
said of the criticisms. "If the church here in New York, the church in
Rome or anywhere else were to refrain to address such crucial issues of
public policy simply because an election campaign is being waged, then
the church would never" be able to address these issues.

"The church will not be silenced simply because of an election," he
added.

The Cardinal's remarks came a week after he equated late-term abortions
with outright infanticide, and a week and a half after President
Clinton's veto. Although Cardinal O'Connor used St. Patrick's pulpit
yesterday to broadly defend the church's right to voice opinions on
policy matters with moral dimensions, he also seemed to be responding
specifically to comments made by Mayor Giuliani on Friday.

Asked about the Pope's criticisms, Mayor Giuliani, who is Catholic,
said: "Such direct involvement in politics is not a good idea, because I
think it confuses people. I think that religious institutions, including
the Catholic Church, have every right to do everything they can to
persuade their members and others as to their moral views. That can be
done without focusing on a particular political figure, in this case the
President of the United States."

... But Governor Pataki, who also is Catholic, defined the church's role
as open-ended: "I think the church has every right to speak out on
issues that they consider to be of importance. And they have every right
to speak out and criticize political decisions and politicians who make
those decisions."

Among Catholic voters, I can only imagine that criticizing Pope John
Paul II is about as popular as criticizing Ronald Reagan. Rudy will
have a long way to go to convince voters that his statement yesterday
was sincere.

UPDATE: It's not so ominous when seen in context as Drudge makes it out to be. But in this race... you have to watch every step.

I'll post the video when it comes up (I'm sure it's out there).

But this report (noted on Drudge) recounts the following exchange at a McCain stop:

Another man — wondering if an attack on Iran is in the works — wanted to know when America is going to “send an air mail message to Tehran.”

McCain began his answer by changing the words to a popular Beach Boys song.

“Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran,” he sang to the tune of Barbara Ann. “Iran is dedicated to the destruction of Israel. That alone should concern us but now they are trying for nuclear capabilities. I totally support the President when he says we will not allow Iran to destroy Israel.”

He stopped short of answering the actual question and did not say if he supports an invasion of Iran.

Listen, we all understand his sentiment. But you can't make light of this stuff in this way. Perhaps at some shtick press lampooning session but not in the public spotlight in serious discussion. Yikes!

That's gonna follow him around.

Here's another greatest hit of McCain (this one is funny and in the right setting)

Oh man............

I like both of those videos...

I think they both help McCain...

Ba-ba-ba-ba-baran sounds a lot like bomb-bomb-bomb-bomb-Iran!

I laughed and thought McCain was very smart, but I guess that is a very old joke that started with the 70s hostage crisis...

This will hurt McCain with most but it helps him with me.

The joke was about as appropriate as joking about the electric chair during a death penalty trial. The statement seems unnecessarily flippant about war. I think it is very inflammatory to people around the world who already think we are a warmongers.

Well, when his campaign does finally crash and burn in an incredible blaze of glory, at least he has a new day job...

Yeah. That is hilarious. I'm definitely a Romney guy, but this kind of thing makes me McCain more likeable to me.

HeavyM writes on Race42008.com:
McCain’s choice to skip the county conventions in South Carolina are really starting to hurt him. First it was a state Representative who had endorsed McCain but voted for Romney in the Horry County straw poll - and said he may switch his endorsement in the future. He was confused as to why McCain wasn’t there, which was a good question - Romney had attended the same dinner earlier in the day as McCain and still managed to make it down to South Carolina.

Now, there’s a local endorser who actually has jumped ship over to Camp Romney, in part because of McCain’s absence:

Saluda County Sheriff Jason Booth jumped to Romney’s campaign on Wednesday, and other party officials have questioned the candidate skipping their county conventions. McCain’s campaign had no immediate comment on Booth’s switch.

Welcome to the team, Sheriff Booth! McCain’s South Carolina organization is in danger right now, and by the time he makes it down there to re-kick off his campaign at the end of this month, he will have missed at least 20 more county conventions and straw polls.

And here’s the latest straw poll result from McCormick County’s convention this evening:

Romney - 35%
Cox - 19%
Giuliani - 16%
McCain - 13%
F Thompson - 8%
Newt - 3%
Undecided - 5%

GOP: Romney Secures Strong Start In Iowa

DES MOINES REGISTER: Thomas Beaumont

"If you were taking a snapshot right now, Gov. Romney has got the most momentum in Southwest Iowa", said Pottawattamie County Republican Chairman, David Overholtzer.

This article speaks to the outstanding organizational ability of Team Romney. Although the author stresses that Rudy Guiliani tops the polls, his on the ground presence significantly trails MR's.

If I were Guiliani and McCain, I'd be looking in the rear view mirror and watching MR pull up to within a couple of inches of my bumper!

Many Conservatives Were Hoping Rudy Giuliani Could Be Given Benefit Of The Doubt On Abortion - It Is Not Looking Good
via race42008.com by Republius on Apr 19, 2007

This piece from W. James Antle III of The American Spectator does a good job of summarizing the rapidly deteriorating possibility of religious and social conservatives co-existing and forming a coalition with Rudy Giuliani in the 2008 presidential race due to abortion. And while there seemed to be room for compromise between the two sides, the Mayor’s flippant plus legally and morally inconsistent recent remarks about the issue, in addition to his similarly terse and incoherent thoughts on gun control, have arguably caused an irreparable rift that is going to cost him significant conservative support.

Mayor Giuliani didn’t exactly have conservatives at hello, but many of them were listening to and considering him up until he failed to speak their language on the issues they care most about. Now, some of his staunchest supporters in the media, such as John Podhoretz and the editors of National Review, are opining that the Mayor “has tied himself in knots” and squandered an opportunity to form a broad and winning coalition over his recent pronouncements on social issues. Ah, what might have been.

John Dickerson. Have you heard of the 2002 winter olympics?
via Elect Romney Blog! by myclob on Apr 18, 2007

http://www.slate.com/id/2164380/

Romney, the richest candidate, was stingiest with his staff members' salaries and often had them fly discount airlines and double up on accommodations like the Super 8 Motel. Instead of free drinks and food at the campaign, they're only subsidized (sodas at 25 cents a can; snacks in the vending machine are 50 cents). His [religious] ties appear to be paying off. So far, Utahans have contributed more than residents of any other state except California.

Click here for the complete article.

Hey John Dickerson, you ever hear of the 2002 winter olympics? Do you know where they were held? Do you know who ran them? Perhaps this had something to do with it?

Also from the piece:

Clinton: ($26 million raised; $30 million on hand.) The senator owes $277,000 to Penn, Schoen & Berland, the polling firm run by her chief strategist, Mark Penn. No candidate in either party spent more on polling, which will not undermine her image as a calculating politician. The senator is also a thorough politician. The filings also show she made a $4,000 donation to House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, the senior Democrat in Congress from South Carolina, a key 2008 primary state. All the campaigns are heavily courting the so-far unaffiliated Clyburn; Clinton is the only one to use her presidential committee to make donations to him.

...John Edwards has a hair weakness. His FEC filings show two $400 haircuts, which raise at least two issues. The first is: what can you get for a $400 haircut, anyway? The second is, given Edwards' past trouble of looking like he cares too much for his hair, couldn't he have put the trims on his personal account?

McCain...$16,317 in catering costs for an event at the swank Beverly Hilton hotel seems more politically problematic, especially since it may come to symbolize the trouble the campaign finds itself in after having raised only $13 million in the first quarter while spending $8 million...McCain has campaigned for years as a pork buster and someone who hasn't been tainted by the profligate spending ways of Washington.

Got this comment:

I serve on the Mass. GOP State Committee, and it was long a joke that we went from catered dinners to a glass of ice water and a peppermint for refreshment when Mitt became Governor! Heck, it took two months to get coffee served!

I especially remember one event - the Rooftop of the Ritz Carleton in Boston - and the refreshments were stale blue corn chips and watery salsa. On the other hand, our state party chair announced that we raised $200,000 that evening - so you be the judge!

And we all went back for those events again and again.

SC: McCain Endorser Votes For Romney in Straw Poll, May Withdraw Endorsement
via race42008.com by HeavyM on Apr 18, 2007

All of you who read my post from earlier this week know that McCain has managed to receive the endorsements of a majority of the state legislators from the state of South Carolina.

And all of you who read an even earlier article know that it is straw poll time in South Carolina as each county holds their county conventions this month. As a result, many of the candidates are down in South Carolina for extended stays: Giuliani, Brownback, Hunter, and Romney were/are all down there, and probably some of the other candidates as well.

One man conspicuously absent from working the county conventions is John McCain, and the grassroots folks are taking note. Some are even comparing it to his missing the CPAC, Club for Growth, and the Heritage Foundation conferences earlier this year. And his absence might cost him, too, in the areas of not only grassroots activists but endorsers as well:

State Rep. Thad Viers of Myrtle Beach was one of 40 Statehouse Republicans who earlier this year endorsed McCain. But Saturday, Viers was at the Horry County GOP convention wondering where McCain was and listening to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

“He gave a great Reaganesque speech. I liked him so much I voted for him in the straw poll,” Viers said.

Viers hasn’t yet decided to withdraw his support for McCain, but will if McCain’s doesn’t steer away from an immigration law compromise he’s been developing with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass. “I think he is taking people for granted,” Viers said. “You can’t assume that people are voting for you.”

McCain is continuing his strange tactic of avoiding places where conservatives are gathered (and where the rest of the candidates are). His answer to all who are wondering where he is?

McCain’s camp says his calendar precludes him from attending, and that the candidate prefers to speak to smaller crowds for longer times than conventions allow.

While some question McCain having prior commitments during the SC convention season, he is doing two things to try and soften the blow of his absence: sending proxies and counting on his money buying support:

His campaign has contacted delegates with mailings, staffed tables at the events and sent surrogates to speak for him. The stand-ins include former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, who is to speak for McCain at conventions in Spartanburg, Laurens and Richland counties this weekend… Boling said McCain’s campaign…is instead focusing on building a support network in part by donating money to local GOP groups and candidates. He said the campaign made $180,000 in donations before the November election.

As we await more straw poll results, it will be interesting to see if McCain’s lack of campaigning at the county conventions will continue to cost him support in the state

McCain Dominant in South Carolina Straw Polls
via race42008.com by LJ on Apr 18, 2007

Speaking of straw poll results, there’s this from the Hotline:

[It] seems that Sen. John McCain has won five South Carolina straw polls: Spartanburg, Dillon, Florence, Clarendon and Greenwood. [links are mine]

McCain had planned to hold a series of townhall meetings at American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts around the state yesterday, but canceled his travel itinerary due to Monday’s horrible events at Virginia Tech. I’m sure they’ll reschedule as soon as possible. Later today, he’ll attend a $2,300/person fundraiser in Charleston, SC. He also plans to stop in South Carolina on April 26th as part of his official 4-day campaign kickoff.

HeavyM and Rep. Viers wondered where he was on Saturday? Why, he was in Des Moines, Iowa giving a speech at the Lincoln Day Dinner. Kavon even provided photographic proof. Now, you don’t have to convince me that John McCain is an amazing human being, but even he is incapable of being in two places at once. I tend to think that that qualifies as a scheduling conflict. Let’s be fair and not forget Mitt’s own “scheduling conflict” last month either.

The notion that he is deliberately avoiding conservative conventions is, quite frankly, ridiculous. Just last week McCain attended the Ottawa County, Michigan Convention and South Carolina is at the center of the entire McCain campaign for the Presidency. If he doesn’t win the state, he doesn’t win the nomination. It’s really that simple.

2008 Race Rankings: The Democrats
via Hotline On Call by hotlineblog on Apr 18, 2007

There is no Democratic front-runner. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards all have a plausible claim on the nomination.

The usual metrics are all jumbled. Clinton leads the money race, leads in New Hampshire, and tops the national polls. Obama led in one recent South Carolina poll we saw, in media love, and in enthusiasm. Edwards has the tightest message, the best organization in Iowa, and the lead in Iowa.

These rankings are ordered by likelihood of winning the Democratic Party primary and are based on a number of factors, including organization, money, buzz and polling. Click here for Republican rankings.

1. No One -- Help wanted. Perhaps the "winner" of the first debate will nudge above the rest.

2.(tie) Hillary Clinton -- New York senator Last Ranking: 1 -- Has a solid lead in national polling ever meant so little, so early? We're not sure the Clinton camp sufficiently steeled itself for the inevitable bruise of Obama's ability to match her in fundraising. The Clinton machine was built by hard work, but also by contingency and circumstance: the magic of doing the right things at the right time. To win, Hillary has to sell herself as a doer (in contrast to Obama's "hoper") and a trailblazer (will she alienate men?). She must also figure out how to survive the early debates without the aura of invincibility that might have kept her rivals from shooting buckshot in her direction and the aura of celebrity that, just six months ago, would have guaranteed that every crowd her campaign built was large and inspired. The good news, though, is that somebody else now has to share the burden of expectations.

2.(tie) Barack Obama -- Illinois senator - - Last Ranking: 2 The Obama campaign has been slow, steady and methodical. At this moment, it doesn't matter that Obama lacks a health care plan, a comprehensive economic policy, any subtle foreign policy vision or even a concrete proposal to move the Middle East peace process forward. But the idea of Obama is worth, it's safe to say, about 20 points in the national polls, and that is not sufficient. Just like Clinton, Obama has earned the privilege to fight for the nomination. That means he must subject himself to the indignities of a presidential campaign. Does he have the plod?

2.5. John Edwards -- Former North Carolina senator Last Ranking: 3 -- From the perspective of pure politics, the cancer announcement and its aftermath were handled adroitly. Edwards has had a good quarter, but he's still stuck between tiers, as our colleague Stu Rothenberg eloquently put it. We are impressed by Edwards' enduring lead in Iowa, where crowds have shown up to Clinton and Obama events, processed them and haven't changed their minds. Still, the Edwards folks have to fortify themselves for the inevitable Iowa falloff. Can they prevent the media from overreacting? Dick Gephardt couldn't survive once he lost his Iowa inevitability. Can Edwards? His final target is Clinton; his immediate enemy is Obama. As you watch him in the debates, keep that in mind.

Today’s Supreme Court decision today, Gonzales v. Carhart, emphasizes two things of political importance. First, and this was echoed in John McCain’s statement about the decision, is the importance of having the right judges on the Court. There is little doubt that the federal law in question would have been decided differently had Justice O’Connor still been on the Court. The additions of Justices Roberts and Alito were pivotal in, as Mitt stated today, “upholding a ban on a practice that offends basic human decency.” For GOP contenders, the easy conclusion is the need to appoint “strict constructionist” judges.

Is that the only conclusion? No. This case stemmed from Congress’ and the President’s pro-active decision to test previous abortion decisions through passing legislation, specifically the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003. Conservative legislators partnered with a conservative Executive to challenge the prevailing legal atmosphere through reasonable restrictions on abortion. Thus, the change brought about today was not purely a judicial phenomenon. The President had an important role in signing legislation that furthered his view on abortion. Had the President not been willing to sign such a bill, the current case would not have been brought, and thus the successful change in abortion law would not have occurred. Therefore, appointing “strict constructionist” judges is hardly sufficient for a Presidential candidate. A President who simply deferred to the judiciary would abdicate a pivotal role in bringing about appropriate changes in the law.

This is one reason why Romney’s statement below is so important.

Update: Here's a good follow-up in the American Spectator.

I might suggest another reason why we continue to need leadership on this issue. I had previously remarked here that the decision, albeit a step forward, is a minor one.

While this decision seems largely the result of replacing Justice O'Connor with Justice Alito (she voted the other way in Carhart I), there is substantial evidence it isn't part of a larger landslide in the direction of life.

Neither of Bush 43's appointments joined the concurrence of Thomas and Scalia that, while supporting the majority opinion's result, maintained that the court's jurisprudence in Planned Parenthood v. Casey was flawed. In fact, the decision in Carhart II, affirms the central tenets laid out in Planned Parenthood v. Casey and relies on that reasoning.

While Justice Kennedy would probably maintain that the new decision applies the Casey decision in the way that it was intended. I find the fact that he voted for Casey troubling.

Which basically means, you have two people for supporting over turning Roe v. Wade (Thomas and Scalia), two people currently upholding Roe v. Wade but otherwise unknown (Roberts and Alito), and one member of the current majority who we know upholds Roe v. Wade (Kennedy).

Where does that put people like me who believe that Roe v. Wade has nothing to do with the Constitution and that states should be allowed to enact reasonable regulations of abortion?

We need a President like Mitt Romney who is on record as supporting that goal and who wants to protect life and appoint judges who will follow the Constitution and not the meanderings of misguided Justices.

Mitt Romney's son Matt RomneyIf you didn't catch it last week, the 5 sons of Governor Romney have their own blog in play: http://fivebrothers.mittromney.com/.

Today, Matt R. (the second oldest) has a great post about his recent experience campaigning in New Hampshire:
This past Sunday I made a trip with my dad to Sunapee, New Hampshire to attend the annual Lincoln Day Dinner. Despite the Nor’easter storms, which are not unusual in New England but are this late in the year, there was a great turn out to listen to him speak. The conditions actually got really bad and the snow began to accumulate rather quickly. With well over an hour of driving still remaining, I was surprised my dad did not want to cancel.

We saw spinouts along the way, so we were not surprised to see tracks ahead of us at one point that veered into oncoming traffic. We slowed down and then noticed that there was a giant tree branch blocking the lane. We saw a couple of guys in a pickup just ahead of us get out and push the limb out of the road. Later that evening, my dad mentioned this in his speech. He correctly pointed out that this was typical of people in New Hampshire – they aren’t always looking for the government or someone else to solve their problems, but chipping in and taking responsibility for their community.

It was a treat for me to get to meet two phenomenal US senators, John Sununu and Judd Gregg. It was also fun to go back to Sunapee where my mom and dad had taken me and my brothers so many times when we were learning to ski in our early years.

This is absurd. Washington Post's "The Slueth" (aka Mary Ann Akers) tries to politicize the VT incident against Romney because he refused to politicize it.

In my mind... the Romney campaign took the high road -- even going so far as to cancel all events on Tuesday and postpone a D.C. fundraiser that was months in the making. There is no reason for noted pols to get attention over this issue.

The Sleuth would do well to take Gov. Kaine's advice:
VA GOV. TIM KAINE: I think that people who want to take this within 24 hours of the event and make it their political hobby horse to ride, I have nothing but loathing for them. This is not a political hobby horse or a crusade or something for a campaign or for a fundraising mailing. At this point, what it's about is comforting family members, doing what can be done to make sure that they have the ability to see their family members, that bodies can be released to families, and helping this community heal. And so to those who want to try to make this into some
little crusade, you know I say take that elsewhere. Let this community deal with grieving individuals and be sensitive to those needs. (Press Conference, 4/17/07)

This is the same problem the media has had in covering Romney: trying to connect two unrelated things. Romney's statements about his personal hunting has nothing to do with the massacre at Virginia Tech. Trying to tie the two is not only a massive stretch of the even the most vivid imagination, but is purely speculation. It has nothing to do with journalism, facts, or truth.

I get updates to your blog via RSS, and so when I read your blog, I just had to go read the article. It pissed me off so bad, I actually wrote the Washington Post and asked for Mary Ann to be fired! This is bullcrap.

I wrote a bit more about it in my blog (http://mittforpresident.wordpress.com/2007/04/18/i-am-so-upset-i-have-steam-coming-out-of-my-ears/)
I hope they do something. That is absolutely ridiculous to write a column with this kind of slant.

still mad...

Hey Justin, thanks for bringing this one out. I was so mad when I read that article. I could not believe that someone would go out of their way to look for mud at this time of grieving in our nation. And then to write something that in effect congratulates the other politicians for doing the "politician thing" is astounding. I can't say what I would really like to say about this person. It is shameful what she wrote I think.

Mitt Romney's approach was not only dignified, it was gracious and understated as it should be. What person at this time in our nation's grieving should go out of their way to draw attention to themselves.

Oh, that is right ---> MS. AKERS!

It is a step forward, albeit a modest one. The Court had previously ruled that the partial birth abortion ban failed the Planned Parenthood v. Casey ruling because its ambiguity effectively result in a ban of all second term D&E procedures and there was no exception for the "health" of the mother. When they say health, they don't mean life of the mother, they mean, mental health or other helath conditions normally related to child birth.

The new law specified more clearly the intention to ban "intact" D&E's. Again, there was no exception for the health of the mother.

What this means is that a second trimester D&E can still be performed. As the dissenting opinion points out, "Nonintact D&E could equally be characterized as 'brutal,' involving as it does 'tear[ing] [a fetus] apart' and 'ripp[ing] off' its limbs. '[T]he notion that either of these two equally gruesome procedures ... is more akin to infanticide than the other, or that the State furthers any legitimate interest by banning one but not the other, is simply irrational.'" [Citations Omitted.]

So, I think Romney appropriately calls it a step forward. I am not satisfied though and I don't necessarily think it will save lives, as another Republican candidate suggested.

Read the full opinion here.

Another sign that elections have consequences folks. The next one is no different!

Does this ruling upset Rudy Giuliani? Rudy Giuliani as head of the "pro-life party" would be a complete catastrophe.

I agree with ben wren. Electing judges is a very important issue to consider. Could I vote for McCain or Guiliani if they were the nominees? Yes, but until they are, I will do all I can to make Romney the nominee because I can trust him with his appointments. However, I can't trust Guiliani or McCain.

My family's prayers go to out to VT

posted by jason | 7:43 AM | permalink
At www.race42008.com all of us contributors were asked to give our assesment of the current crops rankings. Here is mine:

#1 Giuliani

Rudy’s first place is solely based on his strong national numbers. My prediction is Rudy won’t stay in first beyond the summer. He will slowly fade. Rudy has some good things going for him 9-11 popularity, a comfortable easy manner and an enduring lisp. Yet recently he has been slipping in state specific polls and has really not done anything to earn his poll numbers other than put his name out. I have no ideas what he thinks, what kind of policy he would wage, etc. I used to be a Rudy supporter, right behind Mitt. Things have changed for me though as I have seen his strong desire to give socons the proverbial bird. I have come to realize he would be a poor choice to lead the party that is the home of social conservatism. Out of all the candidates he is my last choice. Sorry Kavon. J

#2 McCain & Romney - Tied.

McCain and Romney are in a dead heat IMO. They are vying for top spots in NH, MI and with the latest Rounds of Straw Polls, now South Carolina. McCain took a tough dive in the polls over the last couple month, and really had some frankly crappy fundraising numbers. Any other year it would have been a record, which shows an inability on his part to calculate the road ahead, IMO. Yet McCain’s ground game is only matched (and exceeded) by Romney. McCain is not done yet, but it’s 50/50 where he goes.

Romney’s national numbers have been slowly climbing yet it’s in key states where we see what the influence of his efforts yield. In New Hampshire he has made a huge jump, and he is gaining serious ground in South Carolina. I predict Romney will lead the pack again in fundraising come Q2. I will also say he will show strong in Ames if not win it. Romney’s hurdles are two fold: 1) Overcome low name recognition 2) Define himself before bottom-feeding candidates working hand in hand with the MSM do. I am really not in anyway worried about this.

#4 F. Thompson

Thompson has leveled off, fairly quickly. His key areas of support can be found in the state of Tennessee, Georgia, and the fair weather Editors at Redstate. The key question facing Thompson is what in the world has this guy done that has qualified him to even be included here. The guy had an average career in the senate, many believe him to be pro-choice, and he has nothing under his belt policy/executive experience wise. I am really not anticipating anything fantastic out of this guy. Personally I don’t think the nation is desirous to elect another southern drawled common guy, most people want someone who exudes competence. These are the reasons why I say Thompson really won’t go anywhere beyond where he is.

#5 Gingrich

I really wonder if he is running. If he does, it will be a interesting ride.

#6 Brownback

Brownback has some good ideas. He is a good guy, but unfortunately has very little to offer the current crop other than no experience and a cardboard personality. He is conservative, despite his rejection of the surge and a really bad history on immigration. His flat tax idea will appeal to some, but definitely not the majority. I really think he belongs in the category of a niche candidate, and makes the Gary Glenn’s happy. Although I know that even those people doubt he has the juice. I doubt it too. He raised a little over a million bucks, soundly defeating Huckabee and Hunter, but remember that’s a third of what Al Franken’s Senate campaign raised and a little more than 1/20th of what Romney raised. Brownback continues to run a campaign by making their Target audience Romney voters. It’s really no surprise; I was getting anti-Romney emails from Brownback supporters back in May of 06.

#7 T. Thompson

Popular governor here in the state 30 miles north of me. He might do well and end up with a VP or cabinet spot.

#8 Huckabee

Yo, Huck, get off that water tower!! Are you crazy!?!

The rest are all tied.

Gilmore (Going down, nothing more than a side note)
Paul (Will have a small following in some states)

I had a chance to interview David Brody of The Brody File and CBN's Washington DC correspondent for www.race42008.com. David has some good comments.

Among other things I asked was this:

7. You work for an openly Christian news organization. Judging from your readers and your contacts, how real is Mitt Romney’s Mormon problem?

It’s an issue for sure but not something that he can’t overcome. There are those who truly say no way they won’t vote for Romney just because he’s Mormon. But there are an equal amount of other people who care that his values seem to match up with their values.

You can read the whole interview here.

I love numbers and graphs. Here, the NY Times has provided a great resource.

Many may have seen my post on the MSM's attempts to "explain" or "knock" Romney's fundraising.

I've analyzed some of the numbers and we can see who's REALLY tapping the big money donors the most.

Analysis of maxed-out donors ($2300/donor):

Candidate
Total(mil) from max-out donors
% of total contributions from maxed-out donors

Clinton
$19.2
74%

Obama
$12.6
49%

Romney
$10.2
48%

Giuliani
$9.8
61%

Edwards
$6.6
47%

McCain
$5.9
43%

Tancredo
$0.9
79%

Huckabee
$0.3
57%

T. Thompson
$0.2
56%

Brownback
$0.1
11%

The one thing that stands out is that Hillary is the epitome of the "Big Money" candidate. 3/4th of her massive haul came from donors who contributed the max. She nearly doubles all other candidate in the total haul from maxed-out donors at $19.2 million. This is obviously a testament to the Bill and Hillary Clinton fundraising machine. However, it portends that she has a lot of work to do to expand her fundraising base.

Also, Obama and Edwards aren't quite the pure "candidates of the common man" that they get made out to be (they are grouped with Romney getting just under half of their funds from "big money" donors . . . but the MSM's been telling us that Romney's the one whose "Rolodex is stuffed with wealthy supporters")

Giuliani, percentage-wise at 61%, drew much more heavily on wealthy supporters than any other GOP candidate. He'll have more work to do than Romney (48%) and McCain (43%) at building a more sustainable fundraising base.

Among non-top-tier GOP candidates it appears that Brownback has the most hope of building some fundraising momentum in smaller donations . . . but he doesn't seem to be able to lock up the big donors, which is not good news for him. It is actually doubtful that any of them will be able to raise much money in comparison to the top-tier candidates.

It's a shame that Romney has all that money with no conservative record to stand on.

It's a shame your candidate's only chance is to eat the crumbs from the Romney table.

Billy,

If I remember correctly, you're a Brownback guy. He's a nice man w/ a strong record on abortion. His record in other areas is weaker, however. This election is about multiple issues--not the one or two Brownback is strong on.

People believe in Romney--and it's not just rich Mormons and businessmen--and consequently give him $. Your man, sadly, doesn't generate that same support. Hopefully, we'll later be able to unite behind a common man. I hope that man is Mitt. If it's not, I'll support whomever wins the primary. Till then, good luck.

The American Enterprise Institute has an article written by David Frum. He says that the Reagan Revolution is over. Why? He explains:

In some shrewd instinctive way, the Republican party is sensing that the United States has changed. And just as the Grand Old Party of Lincoln and Grant eventually ran out of Civil War generals to nominate to the presidency, so perhaps time has run out for the old Nixon-Reagan coalition that came together to vote against the social upheavals of the 1960s and the 1970s.
So what does this have to do with Mitt Romney? Frum explains after extolling the virtues of Rudy Giuliani:

Mitt Romney had an equally compelling story of executive leadership to tell. He chose not to. He chose to run as Bush's heir in a year when even Republicans are looking for Bush's opposite. That choice is looking more and more misguided. It may soon look fatal.
Frum’s complaint is essentially that, in spite of Romney’s executive leadership abilities, Romney is a social conservative. He laments that Romney “has given short shrift to his breakthrough health-care achievement,” that he “chose the George H. W. Bush presidential library as the site of his first major foreign policy address,” and that Romney “dropped hints that if nominated, he would choose Florida governor Jeb Bush as his running mate” (although he mentioned at least 4 other names in that same conversation). For these unforgivables Frum declares the end of the Reagan movement.

Frum’s complaint seems overly dramatic. Does Romney’s social conservatism REALLY mean the end of the Reagan revolution? It hardly seems to be the case, since EVERY GOP candidate (including his beloved Rudy) has invoked Reagan and is attempting to follow in the footsteps of the Great Communicator. Rather it seems that Compassionate Conservatism has experienced an untimely demise. There is little doubt that conservatives feel burned by the Bush administration, but it is not because of Bush’s social conservatism. Indeed, one of the high points of his administration has been Bush’s nomination of Justices Roberts and Alito. The frastration with Bush is because he has failed to follow Reagan’s lead to shrink government and competently fight our enemies abroad. Had Bush been able to accomplish these goals, he would be universally praised. However, Bush has not competently pursued these goals, allowing government to bloat and our enemies to fester.

Thus, Romney’s social conservatism hardly connotes the end of the Reagan Revolution. Moreover it indicates the return to conservative principles across the board. Romney would be a return to Reagan’s principles where Bush deviated. Rudy’s candidacy would patently discard an important part of Reagan’s legacy. Romney, however, accepts all of Reagan’s principles: smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense, and, yes, social conservatism.

UPDATED: More email reaction to Rich Lowry:
Hi Rich. Giuliani's comments are the kind of talk that is going to ensure that the Democrats win the White House. He's talking about people ignoring their core beliefs. I have respect for him and think he's a great speaker, but as a Christian conservative (ironically, from Iowa) I can honestly tell you that I will not vote for him. Period. And I don't care if it does allow Hillary the presidency…
David Brody has the video:

h/t Rich Lowry

The New York Port has some remarks by Rudy that frankly are eye-popping to me. As Kate O'Beirne has argued, if the GOP loses its abortion platform... we lose period!
Giuliani made his sharpest case for moving beyond social issues this weekend in Iowa, telling The Des Moines Register, "Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we're for, not if we're a party that's known for what we're against."

Asked about abortion, he said, "Our party has to get beyond issues like that."

Not to throw some friendly advice Rudy's way, but maybe you could try: "By fixating on the status of Supreme Court jurisprudence we get distracted from a lot of good that can be accomplished. I believe we should focus the fight for life toward encouraging adoption and proposals that have a practical effect on the number of abortions performed. We can have a powerful impact on the lives of individual women as we reach out to them and let them know we support them in chosing alternatives to abortion."

Ok, fine.

We're not against abortion, we're for life.

Satisfied, Mr. Mayor?

Rudy doesn't seem to like people very much.

A DUBIOUS "FIRST"

Judith Giuliani moved herself and her 10 year old daughter into Manos Zacharioudakis's apartment on East 55th Street in New York soon after she was divorced from her second husband and before she met her third -- Rudy. They lived together for four years.

The New York Daily News has an article out today that says Zacharioudakis supports his old flame:

"She is a sensual person; she is a passionate person. She has that Italian eroticism and passion."

The article goes on to reveal that Zacharioudakis embarassed Judith in 2000, when Giuliani revealed their affair at a press conference while still married and living with his two small children in Gracie Mansion. How? By holding a Greenwich Village book reading of his erotic novel, "Dance the Melting Ice." This is an "autobiographical" novel which he claims is "based on my relationship with Judi, but it's not about her."

People have talked a great deal about the "firsts" of this Presidential election -- the the first woman, the first African American, the first Italian-American... This article reveals that Judi would qualify as the first potential First lady whose inspire an erotic novel. It makes the "first Mormon" qualifier not look so bad, no?

As Cindy Adams would say, "Only in New York, Kids, Only in New York"... except the Giulianis want all of America to accept them with open arms.

A Rising Swell of Support in South Carolina

If you have been watching Mitt Romney's progress in South Carolina for any length of time, you will recognize the significance of what we are starting to see across the state as county GOP conventions convene and conduct straw polls.

Over the past week we have cheered as Romney has finished first or second in each county's straw poll, but nobody expected the support Romney received over the past weekend. It all started with a shocker in Charleston--as Ann Marie posted on Saturday.

As with any single straw poll victory, observers might question if the results reflected extra campaigning and resources focused on that single event. To the skeptics, I offer exhibit B (from The Chaser):

This weekend we saw the first in a series of big straw polls across the state. Our numbers show that 527 GOP activists voted.

We can argue all day about the importance of straw polls and whether or not they truly mean anything, but for now we will just report the numbers.

We can deduce many different things from these numbers, but four stats jump out at us:

1) Romney is climbing within the GOP base and he is picking up support in past McCain strongholds including Charleston & Horry.
2) McCain is dropping within the GOP base.
3) The GOP base isn’t as wild about Giuliani as public polls show the ordinary voters are.
4) Although the news wants everyone to believe that the GOP base is unsatisfied with its slate of candidates, these straw polls show otherwise. Only 11% voted for Gingrich or Fred Thompson.
TOTAL – 527 voters

Romney – 190 - 36.05%
McCain – 106 - 20.11%
Giuliani – 63 - 11.95%
Huckabee – 37 - 7.02%
F Thompson – 32 - 6.07%
Brownback – 30 - 5.69%
Hunter – 28 - 5.31%
Gingrich – 23 - 4.36%
Paul – 4 - 0.76%
Tancredo – 4 - 0.76%
T Thompson – 2 - 0.38%

Combine the weekend numbers with last weeks' results and here's the leader board with over 730 votes cast in 9 different counties:

According to ABC's "Political Radar", John McCain still wants to change the GOP's abortion platform to explicitly recognize exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother.

In response, Sen. Sam Brownback said, "We should not change the platform. It should not be changed."

Iowa Lincoln Day Dinner: Is Jim Gilmore an idiot?

Krusty has a great write up of the Iowa Lincoln Day dinner. So does Kavon at Race42008. I can’t add much to their reporting, so I will get it be.

However, I will note that Jim Gilmore continued to look like an idiot. And I’m not referring to his flop of a line about "Rudy McRomney". Instead, I am talking about his ham-fisted attack on Fred Thompson:

He jabbed Fred Thompson for only playing a prosecutor on TV.

Up… No. Fred Thompson’s first acting experience was playing himself in the 1985 movie Marie, dramatization of a dangerous prosecution of political corruption in Tennessee.

So Governor Gilmore. You were a prosecutor. Fred Thompson was too. He did something so heroic it got into the movies. You, Governor Gilmore, failed on the car tax, turned the state over to Democrats, and failed as RNC Chair.

The snowball effect of bad news can be fatal in politics. Maybe you shouldn’t mention that to John McCain. With dismal fundraising numbers in the last quarterly report, JMac needs a boost. But the mishaps keep piling up for him, as he spent $8.4 mil of that money already. And what’s to show for the expense? More bad poll numbers and a bevy of wary GOP donors that will most likely back away from McCain when he comes calling for more cash.

Boston, MA – Today, Governor Mitt Romney announced that U.S. Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) has endorsed his campaign for President of the United States.

"Senator Allard's record of leadership and commitment to change make him a valuable addition to my campaign team. In Congress, he has fought to restrain spending while working to ensure that Americans are safe at home and abroad. Senator Allard understands, as I do, that we must bring innovation and transformation to Washington if we are to meet the new generation of challenges facing our country today," said Governor Romney.

Senator Allard joins Senators Bob Bennett (R-UT), Larry Craig (R-ID), Jim DeMint (R-SC) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) among Governor Romney's supporters in the U.S. Senate.

"After reviewing Governor Romney's impressive resume and having the opportunity to visit one-on-one with him about his vision of innovation and change for America, I am proud to announce my endorsement of him," said Senator Allard. "Governor Romney will bring a much needed breath of fresh air to Washington, something the country really desires."

The Des Moines Register has an interesting article on the state of the Race in Iowa.

The article states:
The race for the 2008 caucuses is fluid, with Romney, a former Massachusetts
governor, having laid the most groundwork, followed closely by Arizona Sen. John
McCain.
Republican officials in Iowa's most populous counties give the nod to Romney when asked who has the advantage when it comes to on the ground organization:
"There really isn't a frontrunner in Iowa right now," former state GOP Chairman
Mike Mahaffey said. "The polls say it's Rudy Giuliani. But organizationally, I'd
have to say Romney and McCain are doing more of the hard slogging."
Another believes:
Pottawattamie County Republican Chairman David Overholtzer said Romney has
also been to western and southwest Iowa more often than his fellow candidates,
which could give him a leg up in that GOP-rich part of Iowa."If you were taking
a snapshot right now, Governor Romney has got the most momentum in southwest
Iowa," Overholtzer said.
Chairman Steve Schmitt from the Waterloo area said:
"I still say Romney's got more what I would call momentum up here," Schmitt
said.
Why is this important? Despite the polls saying Giuliani is winning in Iowa the key test at this point is organization. Romney and McCain have invested heavily in their staff organizations. This partly accounts for Romney's burn rate which left him essentially tied with Giuliani on the cash on hand number.

Getting staff, headquarters, and equipment has many one time costs that are incurred by the campaign. Having run a grassroots headquarters in 2006 for Senator Santorum this is an apparent fact for me. The things that have to be bought include copy machines, cell phones, hookup fees for the calling plans for the cell phones, printers, paper, fax machines, office supplies, security deposits on the property they are renting, hookup fees for the services the headquarters requires, tables, furniture, any equipment the staff requires, and materials for grand openings. Then you take all of these expenses and multiply them by how many headquarters are set up around the country in IA, NH, SC, MI and Boston.

These are all one time costs that have been incurred by the Romney Campaign and not by the Giuliani campaign. It has been noticeably lacking in the coverage of Romney's cash on hand numbers and should be considered when analyzing the numbers.

From the Boston Globe:

If you're Mitt Romney, and you're in Texas, and you've recently endured a slew of embarrassing stories over your claims of being a life-long hunter, what do you do? Have a good laugh at yourself.
Romney, speaking to a Reagan Day Republican fund-raiser in Dallas tonight, recounted for his audience last week's hunting flap, in which he was forced to defend his hunting claim by saying he had shot small rodents at various points in his life.
"I want you to know that those small animals can be ferocious," he said. Then Romney pulled out his "trophy" kill: a toy squirrel mounted on a piece of wood. (The squirrel even squeaked, which Romney said was "the sound I heard just before I let it have it.")

On a roll now, Romney continued the joke by saying how disappointed his grandchildren were this year when the Easter Bunny skipped the Romney household.

"He heard I was packin' heat," Romney said, and the room erupted in hearty laughter.

Thanks to Evangelicals for Mitt.

***Action oriented post . . . take action by donating to Romney's campaign****

Many pundits and reporters are apparently shocked that Romney rivaled Hillary and Obama in fundraising (while strongly outpacing his GOP rivals). They feel like they have "some splanin' to do" and boy have they been spinning his success as negatively as they can.

Always leading the liberal MSM charge we can count on the NY Times with this piece "Romney Used His Wealth to Enlist Richest Donors"

Mr. Romney's financial support is deep but narrow. He amassed $20 million from fewer than 33,000 donors, according to figures disclosed by his campaign. By comparison, Mr. McCain raised $12.5 million from nearly 50,000 donors while Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois, raised $25 million from more than 100,000. Their average contributors each gave about $250; Mr. Romney's gave more than $600.

(Why do they think Romney "amassed" his money while McCain and Obama "raised" theirs? . . . a small point, but unmistakably biased)

Need more evidence? Plenty to follow . . .

Newsweek article:

The Romney 2008 campaign has been very methodical. His fund-raising machine is a marvel; in just one day last January, he raised $6.5 million, almost just to show that he could. But his base is narrow—mostly wealthy Mormons and Wall Streeters.

From the Economist (one of my favorite periodicals BTW):

It helps Mr Romney that his Rolodex is stuffed with wealthy supporters. His money came from just 33,000 contributors. Mr McCain, in contrast, relied on 60,000 people.

What is the natural conclusion of all this? It is that Romney can't sustain this fundraising pace . . . that he lacks a grassroots appeal . . . that his donors will be tapped out early.

From Poltical tip sheet Hotline:

It's likely that the average gift was astronomically high, meaning there is almost no chance this is a "grassroots outpouring" in favor of Romney. (which is confirmed by the very skewed ratio of donors to dollars raised) This is a large dollar candidate, not an Internet candidate.

Another opinion from RedState:

Don't get me wrong, for Mitt Romney to have raised over 20 million is impressive. But if one takes a closer look at where the donations came from, one finds Romney got far more "big" donations than did McCain. What that means is that in the next round or two of fundraising, Romney's donors will be tapped out to the max, whereas McCain's campaign can go back and get repeat donations (in smaller quantities) from the same loyal donors . . . For Mitt Romney, it could be a case where he might have peaked too early.

I view this all as a challenge!

We all know that Mitt has a great "ground game". . . both in organized political staff and grassroots supporters; so let's show that we can prove all the naysayers wrong and help him win the next round of fundraising (this time with over 100,000 donors!).

DONATE TO ROMNEY'S CAMPAIGN. (for those that use my Fundraiser ID 225003, rest assured that 100% of your contribution goes to Romney's campaign directly . . . or use someone else's ID, or use nobody's ID . . . JUST CONTRIBUTE TO ROMNEY'S CAMPAIGN!!!) Get your spouse to donate, get your kids, parents, friends, in-laws, neighbors, co-workers, dogs (OK . . . I think McCain-Feingold prohibits doggie donations) to donate too. Even just $10 would be very helpful (and rest assured that names are not reported on FEC filings for contributions under $200 . . . if it's that important to you).

This second challenge is for everyone that has already donated in the first quarter. Great! Now match or exceed your Q1 contribution to keep the MittMentum going!

Forward a link of this blog entry (copy and paste URL from here) to anyone who you think might want to support Romney's campaign. Let's prove all the MSM pundits and naysaywers wrong! We can do it!

I twice donate $10. I'm a broke student--hardly one of Mitt's wealthy backers.

Neal (I know who you really are!),

You are a great example. Good for you! I'm still in training and have no-where near maxed out my contribution . . . but I will donate more this quarter than last!

Good luck straightening teeth dude!

I donated $25 twice last Q and I'll try to send more this next one. I'm just an artist and likely not to be found in Mitt's rolodex.

I know you like your current code, but it is kinda ugly. You know you can just hard-code your FID into the link:

https://www.mittromney.com/contribution/form:fid=225003,sc=FUT

That will automatically fill in your Contributor ID and Source Code (FUT... assuming you're in UT. You can change it for whichever state or event you want to support)

I know... I liked it too. You don't have to shower me with thanks.

:-)
