Forgive me while I wax sentimental. I posted this on my first blog www.illinoisansformitt.blogspot.com a year ago this weekend. It's kind of fun to look back at it. Everything still holds true that I said. It's also fun to think about the days when I was excited because I went from 10 hits to 12 hits in a single day. I've helped start www.MyManMitt.com, which gets around 1-2000 hits a day and has been quoted by nearly every conservative online rag along with CNN, Fox News, BBC, NPR, Meet the Press along with several Boston TV stations and newspapers. Don't mean to brag, but it is kind of fun to think about.

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Washington D.C. for the first time. Among the things that impressed me the most was the WWII Memorial situated between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. As I sat there reflecting I began to think about how are country has changed since WWII. I particularly thought of my grandfather.

Born in 1915 he was eligible to fight in the war, yet stayed home because his services as an airplane designer were needed at a small airplane manufacturer in California he worked for, Northrop. Throughout the war, he once told me, he would get jeers and comments when he would be out with my grandmother for not being out and fighting for the US. He went on to co-create some of the very planes that would help defeat the Nazis

I will never forget how in the last years of his life, having suffered a stroke that left him without the ability to speak, he would still pull out books of the airplanes that he worked on and proudly showed me the fruits of his labors. He never expected a free ride. As the son of a hard working carpenter in Los Angeles he never considered the idea of passing the personal responsibility to hold a job and provide for his family to someone else. He died leaving a modest savings and a house that was paid off long ago to his descendants- a tribute to the work ethic, sacrifice and frugality of his generation. He was a giver not a taker.

As I sat there thinking of these things, I realized America has strayed little by little from those roots that were once so strong. While we once stood for patriotism, sacrifice, God and personal responsibility, the en vogue principles today are asserting your rights and milking the government. Which is why I decided to become involved with Gov. Mitt Romney's unofficial grassroots organization.

I have started a grassroots organization in Illinois that can be found at http://illinoisans4mitt.blogspot.com. It is part of a larger grassroots organization that promotes Mitt Romney for the 2008 presidential election. Mitt Romney on every issue has stressed the personal responsibility of individuals. He said "welfare without work creates negative incentives that lead to permanent poverty. It robs people of self-esteem." Unlike my grandpa who could leave this world with a feeling of satisfaction resulting from his labors, millions of Americans will will not because government has created a system of dependence. Our government has failed it's citizens in this regard.

Romney believes in states right to decide its own fate through the legislature, not judicial order. He is pro-family, pro-life and pro-values. He has created a medical plan that shifts responsibility from the state to the individual and has shown the State of Massachusetts that fiscal budgets need to be balanced without taxing the people.

As voters become more familiar with Romney those attributes that are so desperately needed in our nations leaders will shine through. He will inspire America to a higher cause as Regan did, and promote government agendas that will reduce government and promote a better sense of self-reliance. He has proven he can bring Democrats along with his agenda as is becoming increasingly necessary, while at the same time promoting conservative ideals and the GOP.

Hopefully Affleck will make his pilgrimage to SLC to apologize. :) Somehow, as a Mormon, I find it comforting to see Affleck call my religion questionable.

"The Mormonism thing is really suspect.... Looks like a Ken doll." Affleck is a dolt (akin to Old English dol--> foolish). The two were more ridiculous than they were funny.

This is why actors should stay out of politics (except for Arnold). It lets us see just how unelightened they are.

Mitt Romney is everything we hope our sons will grow up to be. He is educated, faithful, brilliant, hard working, successful....
Now wonder the libs dislike him so much.

Nealie... Lest we forget about Ronald??? But sometimes I kind of wish Arnold had stayed out of politics (taxing doctors to improve healthcare???)

Regarding Ben Affleck, though... I'd LOVE to see footage of him at an Family Home Evening in Sandy, Utah a'la Al Sharpton. The fact that I wouldn't wish that verdict on MYSELF makes it all the more amusing.

Okay, Ben I'll take your word for it. You clearly have a history of accurate and unclouded judgment: can anyone say Gigli?

The biggest headline from this poll is that Romney increased his total poll numbers by 50% (as noted prviously on this blog) from 10% to 15%. However, I find the favorable/unfavorable trends for the GOP top-three to be the real story . . . and they are good news for Team Mitt!

McCain's "favorables" went DOWN from 39% to 33% and his "unfavorables" went UP from only 20% to 31% while the "undecideds/haven't heard enough" decreased from 41% to 35%.

Giuliani's "favorables" went DOWN from 60% to 53% and his "unfavorables" went UP from only 10% to 18% while the "undecideds/haven't heard enough" stayed pretty stable (decreased from 30% to 28%.)

In contrast Romney's "favorables" went UP from 20% to 28% and his "unfavorables" were fairly stable (slightly up--9% to 11%).

The real story here is that AS his previously huge "undecided's/haven't heard enough" figure of 71% went down to a still very large 60% his favorable/unfavorable percentages broke strongly in his favor (8% higher favorable and 2% higher unfavorable----NET PLUS 6% for Romney compared to a NET MINUS 17% for McCain and a NET MINUS 15% for Giuliani . . . Put another way, Romney GAINED 23% in net favorability on McCain and 21% on Giuliani). Assuming that this postive shift for Romney represents the opinions of the new 11% that no longer were "undecided/haven't heard enough" about him, that would mean that 4 out of 5 of these likely Republican voters formed a favorable view of Romney and only 1 out of 5 formed an unfavorable view of him.

Granted, it's probably not the best assumption to think that this shift is all just from the new 11% people now feeling informed about Romney. Why? By comparison, that would have been a statistically impossible way to explain the negative shift in the "undecided/haven't heard enough" numbers for Giuliani and McCain. The only mathmatically possible explanation for the strong negative shift for these candidates is that A SIGNIFICANT PORTION WHO PREVIOUSLY HAD FAVORABLE OPINIONS OF MCCAIN AND GIULIANI FLIP-FLOPPED ON THEIR OPINION OF THEM. Looks like "flip-flops" may be a bigger problem for Rudy and John than for Mitt, eh?

Now, if that's not over-analysis of one little poll, I don't know what is. Still, I thing that these figures play into team Romney's belief and mantra that "those who come to know Romney almost invariably break his way." His strong move in the early states lends credence to this belief. So, is Romney the political embodiment of the phrase "to know him is to love him?"

Mark Mabry, a professional photographer, was on hand for the Women for Romney kickoff. Here's his take on the event:
One could ramble endlessly about the embraceable grace with which Mrs. Romney carries herself in a crowd, but I've got a unique perspective so I'll talk about that. Today, I photographed a luncheon as part of the Women for Mitt kickoff. The festivities began and there were about 20 guests invited to be photographed with Mrs. Romney. Photographing the same person 20 times next to 20 different people is a lesson in psychology for one willing to learn it. Here's what I mean. I watched Mrs. Romney throughout the session (about 25 minutes). She is not a fake laugher or insincere on any level. I occasionally am lucky enough to photograph people with that extreme level of comfort in the person they are, but rarely does one see it in the political arena. Mrs. Romney is gracious and sympathetic and you could feel a "mom" vibe from her too. Photographically speaking, in a posed setting, she comes across consistently confident and in candid situations her sincerity is more evident. No "deer in the headlights" here. Her confidence shows in her ability to go about business not worried about a camera possibly misrepresenting her, because when you're that real, it can't.

Here's the slideshow he put together. Visit his website and blog.

Any doubts former Sen. Fred Thompson isn't getting into the race have probably flown out the window based on the news this morning that Rep. Marsha Blackburn has jumped off the Mitt Romney Bandwagon and endorsed Thompson. Given that Blackburn is friends with Thompson and from the same state, the endorsement isn't a surprise. But the timing is. Thompson isn't announced yet. This leads us to believe that Blackburn must know something other folks don't. Otherwise, why so publicly go out on a limb and embarrass the Romney camp? According to Romney insiders, Blackburn was slated to help run the "Women for Romney" operation and was in line to be a key national surrogate for the campaign down south. This isn't a huge blow to that campaign by any stretch. But it is an interesting little twist to a race that is getting more interesting by the hour. Link

According to a very strong source in the campaign, "She was getting a lot of state party pressure...She wants to run on a state-wide basis some day" I guess there is a lot of pressure and a lot of people to please in these sorts of things.

Marsha Blackburn was not really the most prominent member of the campaign, but prominent none the less. It's good get for Thompson, but her role should be one Team Mitt can replace without a problem. Best of Luck to Marsha, no doubt you are on a good team!

The amendment failed by one vote.

Sam Brownback did not vote.

Does anyone know why?

Apparently he also missed another crucial vote earlier in the week

Governor Romney Outlines Three Priorities On Immigration Reform.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "We're going to have to secure our border first. Two, put in place an employment verification system to make sure we're giving jobs only to those people who come legally. And number three, for the 12 million, we can't allow them to have a special privilege of being able to stay here indefinitely." MIKE GALLAGHER: "Well, I tell you that's music to my ears and to the ears of millions of Americans…"
("Mike Gallagher Show," 5/21/07)

Governor Romney: Border Security Is Number One. GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "[T]he people I speak with as I go to Republican events agree with me that there are three key rules that we have to follow. One is, we have to secure the border. Two is, we have to have an employment verification system to know who's here legally and who's not here legally. That's only fair to the employers to know who is who. And then, finally, for those people that are here illegally today, while it may be fine for them to apply for citizenship and to apply for permanent residency, that they should do so in line with everyone else and they should be given no advantage, no special privilege by having come here illegally." (Fox News' "Your World," 5/24/07)

Watch Governor Romney Here.

Governor Romney: "I believe it's important to end illegal immigration so we can maintain and encourage legal immigration. Immigration is good for this country; it's helped us over our history. We need immigration to provide some of the skills that we may miss, migrant workers, cultural advantages. It's a great source of vitality for America to have legal immigration, but illegal immigration – that we need to bring an end to." (KCMO's "Morning Show With Chris Stigall," 5/22/07)

Justin Hart Mission Poland
Elder Hart (circa 1992) on my mission in Poland. The two gentleman are not Mormon converts (or prospects for that matter). They are, shall we say, not thirsty. Note: this picture was taken at 1:00PM in the afternoon
Wow! A non-hit piece from a leftist rag about Mitt Romney and Mormonism. Will wonders never cease!

Noam Scheiber in The New Republic has an excellent piece entitled: "How missionary work trains Mormons to stump for Mitt" (subscription req'd) comparing the canvassing approach of modern politics to the experience that many Mormons get on a mission (full disclosure here, I'm a member of the LDS Church).

I was holding my breath reading the article waiting for some asinine line about Mormon underwear and authoritarian rule from the secret room in the Salt Lake City Temple... happily it never came.

Here are some key graphs:
There's no question that the enthusiasm of affluent Mormons is a huge boost for Romney. The former Massachusetts governor could not have solidified his first-tier status without his impressive fund-raising haul, and the haul would not have happened without his Mormon base. But, then, as the Romney campaign never hesitates to point out, this kind of advantage is hardly unheard of in presidential politics. Michael Dukakis tapped the wallets of affluent Greek-Americans in 1988; Joe Lieberman benefited from outsize Jewish donations in 2004.
This is accurate. Just as Rudy Giuliani will draw from Italians, Obama from African Americans and John McCain from traderous RINOs (j/k)...
Romney's Mormonism does, however, confer at least one truly unprecedented advantage--one that could be decisive in a closely contested primary. It derives from an aspect of the Mormon community that the press has largely underplayed: the vast grassroots organizing potential of thousands of highly-disciplined young missionaries.
OK... just so Erik Erickson doesn't get plastered by Hugh again... let me make this absolutely clear. Noam is not saying that Mormon missionaries will be canvassing for Mitt but that the experience they gain on a mission is akin to political grassroots activities and that return-missionaries (RMs as Mormons call them sometimes) will make great ground troops for Mitt.

Once more for emphasis: NO MORMON MISSIONARY WILL BE HITTING THE PAVEMENT FOR MITT. If fact, I suspect that the LDS Church will give explicit instructions to missionaries to avoid discussion altogether about the subject.

Back to TNR:
The Mormon Church is somewhat vague with the details of missions, so I've relied on two Mormon sources to get a sense of how the process works. (Some of the particulars may have changed since they served in the 1990s, but the broad thrust should be the same.) The typical mission begins with a three-week training course at the aptly named Mission Training Center in Provo, Utah. There, the Mormons receive a crash course on the missionary lifestyle and the rudiments of spreading the good word.

Arguably the most important skill they acquire in this regard is how to get in the door, and the trainees hone this skill through extensive role-playing. For example, they are taught to search for common ground with potential converts--everything from their taste in cars or pets to their religious worldview. "Take the belief in Jesus Christ," says one of the former missionaries. "We might have different beliefs about Him, but most people do believe in some sort of Supreme Being, they have ideas about that. You build on that, go from there." It's not so different from the way a canvasser might seek a connection with a voter over, say, a shared interest in the environment.

There are roughly 100 regional missions in the United States (out of about 340 worldwide), each of which is divided into several zones of about 20 missionaries, with each zone subdivided into three or four districts. Upon arriving at his or her mission, a young Mormon will meet with the mission president--usually a respected member of the Mormon community called to serve a three-year term--who assigns the missionary to a district. Once there, he or she will be paired with a more experienced partner--called a "companion"--who functions as an on-the-job trainer. Most missionaries work twelve hours a day, six and a half days a week. They live on small stipends, in Spartan quarters--secondhand furniture, no TVs or computers--and dine on such extravagances as cereal and peanut butter. The Church allows them to call home exactly twice a year: on Christmas and Mother's Day. Rejection is overwhelmingly the most common feature of their existence.

Veterans of early primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire often speak in the obscure shorthand of "ones," "twos," and "threes." Ones refer to the voters who are solidly with your candidate. Twos are people who are either leaning that way or are altogether undecided. Threes are people who support your opponent. The job of the organizer is to convert all the twos to ones and to keep the ones from backsliding. The total number of ones at any given time is known as the campaign's "hard count." (Tellingly, Trippi constantly complained that the Dean campaign lacked a meaningful hard count.)

It turns out that Mormon proselytizing is remarkably similar to corralling voters in this respect. In effect, the missionary's universe also consists of ones (the people firmly on track to be baptized as Mormons, known as the "baptizing pool"), twos (people open to converting but who haven't entirely made up their minds, called the "teaching pool"), and threes (people who slam doors in their faces--i.e., the vast majority). As in politics, the twos receive the most attention. The Mormon technique for winning over metaphysical undecideds involves asking a person to make a series of gradually escalating commitments. After the first encounter, the missionary might ask them to read a passage in the Book of Mormon and pray about it. Over time, the missionary will petition the prospect to abstain from cigarettes, alcohol, and out-of-wedlock sex. (The canvasser, by contrast, will usually settle for convincing someone to display a yard
Really good stuff and altogether accurate. Of course if you read Hugh Hewitt's book this would be old hat.

More on this soon...

"McCain is Blue"

Rofl. Was that intentional?

On trend I really enjoy watching is the price that bookies put on a Romney win. YOu can follow them in realtime at intrade, com. Recently Romney inched into first place past Giuliani and Mccain. He is slated to win by a wide margin in New Hampshire.

intrade.com -->choose politics, then Election 2008 from the left sidebar.

State Senator Russell Pearce
(HT: EFM)

KVOA (NBC News in Tucson, AZ) reports that a State Senator is challenging McCain to step up or step down:
State Representative Russell Pearce, a Mesa Republican, says McCain is spending too much time on his Presidential campaign and missing too many Senate votes.

According to the Washington Post, McCain missed almost 50% of Senate votes during the current session. The only other senator with a worse record is South Dakota's Tim Johnson, who is recovering from a brain hemorrhage.

Pearce says, "I am calling on the Senator to show up and vote, or if he's going to be a fulltime candidate, then yes, he ought to resign and let somebody take that position that's going to represent Arizona and be there to vote."

Brody file has the scoop on Romney's stance:

“Governor Romney effectively used available federal funds through the Title V program to implement abstinence education in Massachusetts classrooms. The governor feels that it is important for this alternative to remain available for school districts who want to promote the teaching of abstinence to our young students. As he has said in the past, Governor Romney never had any parent complain to him that their kids are not learning enough about sex in school, but a number of parents wondered why we don’t speak more about abstinence as a safe and preventive health practice.

Brody then adds this commentary:

Pretty straightforward on abstinence only programs but is the Governor OK with federal dollars being used to support some of those other comprehensive sex ed programs? I asked that question in a follow up to the campaign two days ago. I never did get a response on that.

I really hope the answer to this is no federal funding on sex education. I am guessing that Romney would say no federal funding but allow states to make their own choices. If states pick up the tab, that would be their choice; but I hope even then he would say government has no role in educating youth about sex- therefore while legal it is inappropriate.

Here is quote from a 2006 press release:

“In my service as Governor, I’ve never had anyone complain to me that their kids are not learning enough about sex in school. However, a number of people have asked me why it is that we do not speak more about abstinence as a safe and preventive health practice,” said Romney.

“Abstinence education gives young people the support they need in making the decision to postpone sexual activity until they are mature enough to handle the emotional, moral and financial responsibilities of parenthood,” he said. “This is more than teaching kids to say no – it will help them preserve self-esteem and build character.” Link

As public health educator, I'm afraid it would be a mistake to withdraw funds from comprehensive sex ed programs.

Many studies have tested the effectiveness of abstinence programs and they just don't work. On a matter of principle I wish they did.

One argument against comprehensive sex ed is that by talking about "safe sex" and other sexual topics, it peeks curiosity and encourages promiscuity. The data actually shows the opposite. Keep in mind this is not merely anecdotal evidence, these are multi-year longitudinal and cohort studies with significant statistical associations. Sometimes the facts need to be balanced with ideology.

Yesterday we brought you the new TV ad that the Romney campaign had put together. Now we bring you the facts behind the ad.

What were the odds against Romney in Massachusetts?

The Economist, On Governor Romney: "Being The Republican Governor Of Such A Liberal State As Massachusetts Must Be Like Swimming Through Sugary Sludge." "Being the Republican governor of such a liberal state as Massachusetts must be like swimming through sugary sludge. Everywhere he looks, he is surrounded by sweet-talking liberal legislators, judges and citizens." (Editorial, "Mitt Romney And Gay Marriage," The Economist, 6/30/05)

There Are Almost 3 Times As Many Registered Democrats As Republicans In Massachusetts:

The Massachusetts Legislature Is Comprised Of Over 85% Democrats. (Maria Cramer and John C. Drake, "Republican Lawmakers Hit Historic Low Mark," The Boston Globe, 11/8/06)

Against Those Odds, Governor Romney Enacted A Conservative Agenda:

As I cover this race, it has been my observation that after Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney is the one most targeted by rival camps. Yes, even more than Giuliani. Why? Because there's a feeling that Giuliani will eventually flame out on his own because of his public positions. Romney, on the other hand is considered a major threat because of his appeal to true conservative voters.

Romney's got it Right Again!

Responsible use of our freedoms is paramount. Just as "Freedom of Speech" does not grant someone the right to scream "FIRE!!" in a theater (where people could die from the scramble out), the media and those infamous "leakers" in DC do not have a protected right to put others in danger. Romney's right that this was completely irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

At least, that's what the press wants you to think.

The man who had been written off across the political spectrum as unelectable is suddenly leading in Iowa and New Hampshire (two of the three critical early Primary wins according to Charlie Cook).

So, how do you deal with serious trends showing serious momentum for Mitt? Ah yes, now he's peaking too early.

The vacillation of press excuses is humorous but really par for the course.

My prediction remains however. While many would chalk the race up to Rudy vs. Romney the tea leaves tell me that McCain is the man to beat. Yes he has taken to self-defeatism of late but you discount McCain at your peril.

The recent sparring between former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and Senator John McCain is not accidental. Both campaigns are led by wizened pros of the political arena. Both camps have serious ground operations already in place. Both camps have numerous endorsements from local elected officials. Both camps have an existing base of supporters across the nation. Finally, both camps realize that Rudy will not win the Primary and that the race will come down to Romney or McCain.

While McCain decried the “money in Washington" he also fired quite a few individuals over the lackluster performance in Q1 fundraising. But McCain knows fundraising. He has one of the best mailing lists in the politics and has hired mail firms that can tell you within a 10% how much money you will raise per drop.

Romney has a smaller list but has mastered the art of incentive-based fundraising with numerous programs tailored to the individual. Paybacks for College Students; networking for young professionals; online bonus points for the net savvy; associate fundraising for the real ambitious. Team Romney has also commandeered a good number of former Bush associates in Florida, Ohio, New Hampshire and elsewhere to run their ground operations.

Rudy has his name. He has a decent national staff. Rudy may match both candidates with the simple star power... but beyond this he does not have the ground game to make up the difference.

I could go on... but I really don't have to. The race is still Romney vs. McCain. And after this last week... I like our chances :)

I can't help but wondering it very likely that Fred Thompson would swoop up McCain's team. The timing is almost perfect, and I think a lot of McCain's people will be more than happy to bail out of the sinking ship to someone like Fred who is a good friend of McCain.

I honestly believe this contestion will be between Fred and Mitt.

I cannot figure out why, but I can't comment on that blog, so I'll have to comment here. That is some of the most blatant, twisted, obvious use of video editing and taking comments out of context that I have seen in a very long time. How can they write this and then post it as if it were gospel, and defend it in the comments section? Good job, cwpete, for defending Mitt!!! You're awesome!

The only other time I have been to that site was when I was lead to a blog on there the other day that was blatantly anti-Romney, and it made me shake my head in wonder. With a name like "Eye on 2008," it seems to purport itself as an unbiased blog covering all presidential candidates (or at least the Republican candidates--it's fairly uncommon to find a blog that covers ALL candidates, lib and cons.) But they are very, very, very clearly biased; it only takes about 2 seconds of perusing the blogs to see that they hate Mitt with a virulence that I've only seen copied by DavidB and TLG on Race42008. Perhaps one of them is running that site...

Anyway, on a blog like MyManMitt and my blog, MittForPresident, you don't expect to have unbiased blogs covering all Republican candidates. We care about our candidates, and we are going to write why it is that we care about our candidates. If you want pro-Giuliani or pro-McCain blogs, I'm telling you right now, my blog is not the place to check out. But we don't haveto be unbiased, because we are stating from the onset that we are backing Mitt.

EyeOn2008 needs to rename their blog to "We Hate Mitt With a Passion, and We Will Twist the Facts Blatantly to Show Him in the Worst Light Possible." I guess that would make for a rather large website address, so perhaps they could shorten it to www.wehatemitt.com and the tagline could explain the rest. ;)

I can tell you one thing: I'm never going back to that site again. I've got better things than to read diatribes by idiots.

In the face of McCain's accusations of flip-flopping on immigration, Mitt Romney today opted for the roll-your-eyes-and-chuckle instead of the counterpunch. Speaking briefly with reporters in Dallas this afternoon, Romney responded with a laugh to McCain's "shoot the Guatemalans off his lawn" potshot -- which McCain liked enough to repeat to television cameras again last night in Oklahoma City."I guess it just shows that, even when he's wrong, he's amusing," Romney replied. He went on to defend himself against charges that he's inconsistent on immigration, ticking off the tough-on-illegals policies he promoted as Massachusetts governor. But he noticeably deferred when the press fished for a direct critique of the compromise bill hobbled together by the President and Congress earlier this week. "I'm not in the position to make that call today."

Good job Mitt! Although I would have preferred a joke that used dentures and mashed carrots.

His reply concerning McCains insult is a classic response from the Reagan book of rhetoric.

You never castigate your opponents. Only humbly respond "Well, there he goes again" without any clear attacks on his character.

Well executed Mitt. That will go a long way to increasing his popularity. While the media and people love the Springer-esque moments in political forums, it usually ends up hurting a candidates electability. Sure people are entertained with the battle of insults, but when it is time to vote, people want a statesmen, not an egocentric jerk.

I wanted a fiercer response, but laughing off these things is more mature and usually plays better with the voters.

Sometimes you just need to call a spade a spade. Over at B4M I’ve made it a point to have a lot of fun at Damien LaVera’s expense. He’s Howlin’ Mad Howie Dean’s Head Mitt Hit Man – which means he’s tasked with writing press releases every few days where he takes pot shots at “Smooth Talking Mitt”. For some odd reason, the irony of a DNC staffer deriding anyone as a Smooth Talker (in the wake of Slick Willy) has yet to dawn on LaVera. Add to that the fact he continuously quotes himself – probably only to increase his Google rating - and you end up with a really comical press release.

Well, today LaVera crossed a line. Evidently he thinks if you repeat a lie enough times it will be believed as the truth. Last December, the Boston Globe’s Jonathan Saltzman, Maria Cramer, and Connie Page wrote a story with the headline “Illegal Immigrants toiled for governor” – insinuating that then Governor Romney hired illegal immigrants to landscape his Belmont property.

There’s only one problem with the story. Governor Romney didn’t hire the Guatemalans - they worked for the landscaping company he hired. The company’s owner was, in fact, a legal immigrant. Governor Romney wasn’t required by any law or policy to enquire or verify the immigration status of the landscaping company’s workers. The Boston Globe’s story was based on a false premise and fueled by a false headline. Said story has long since been debunked.

Damien LaVera didn’t get that memo and probably ignored the facts surrounding this non-story altogether. Truth and other factual information mean little to him because that kind of thing doesn’t make for good press copy. Today LaVera released the following statement about Governor Romney:

…Romney himself employed undocumented workers at his own home in Massachusetts as recently as December.
This statement, taken from the first paragraph of LaVera’s self aggrandizing press release is an outright bold faced lie. Governor Romney did not employ the “undocumented workers”. He did not interview them, he did not directly pay them. The most contact he had with them was the occasional “Buenos Dias”. Unless you consider the occasional glass of water from Ann to be a direct payment, LaVera’s statement leaks credibility like a sieve.

Facts are stubborn things. The fact of the matter is, of the current crop of presidential contenders, Governor Romney is the only one who actually did something on the issue of illegal immigration. You’ll notice that article wasn’t cited in LaVera’s hit piece.

Damien LaVera’s job is to tarnish Mitt as much as possible. His job is an unenviable one because there is so little for him to work with that he must rely on lies, half-truths, and ad-hominem attacks to fill his daily press quota.

I’m sorry, Damien. Your cheap shot press release comes across a little more than a lie, and a pathetic one at that. Try harder next time.

Illegal aliens have seeped into every facet of my life. I couldn't get away from them unless I was beamed out of here.

How many illegal aliens worked on John Edwards' castle in North Carolina?

Roger Simon of The Politico has written a pretty funny piece on the Ames Straw Poll.

It is undeniable that the better funded and better organized candidates stand to do the best there . . . but, it is also undeniable that no one can win without actually turning out Iowan supporters (meaning you actually need supporters . . . i.e. money alone is not enough). Let anyone you know in Iowa that might be a potential Romney supporter to plan on the date (Aug 11th) and contact the campaign about going.

Update:
A more serious take on the straw poll was in today's Des Moines Register. That piece included this gem:

The results also show that Mitt Romney leads among people planning to attend the straw poll. The former Massachusetts governor, who leads the GOP field in the most recent Iowa Poll, frequently mentions the straw poll while campaigning in Iowa.

According to the poll, 34 percent of likely straw poll attendees support Romney, reflecting his overall support among Iowa Republicans.

Now the expectations are high. Let's help Romney deliver!

Also, go over to Iowans for Romney for some photos of Josh Romney's recent swing through Iowa.

One thing is clear from the detailed dissection of the immigration bill and the inside baseball deal brokering behind the scenes: this is tense and ugly.

One things is now also crystal clear: McCain mirrors both of these traits.

As if the screaming match from John F. McCain wasn't enough, the AZ Senator tries to hang with the blogging crowd by pulling out a trio of half-legitimate issues and performing his own mash-up insult on Mitt Romney.

In case you missed it here's the audio:

Dean Barnett sees this as a key milestone (or millstone) for the McCain campaign:
Aaah, as Robert Duvall said in Apocalypse Now, I love the smell of a campaign imploding in the morning. At least I think that was the quote.
I'm not that optimistic. McCain still has the ground game (which in my book is the only game in town).

The offending quote is this:
"Maybe I should wait a couple weeks and see if it changes... maybe he can get out his small varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his yard."
That is an insult, plain and simple. McCain makes his own blogger mash-up adding in a misguided flip-flop, a 2nd amendment non-issue, and a borderline bigoted immigration swipe. It's both tense and ugly. Tense because he knows the mass of people pounding his phone and ugly because it is, ugly.

Ken Madden, spokesman for Romney, has this to say:

“Governor Romney has been very clear that he opposes this immigration agreement, which clearly falls short of the American public’s expectations. It seems that certain candidates who brokered this flawed plan are having a very difficult time grappling with or coming to terms with the political fallout that has ensued in a substantive manner.”

Sore spot! Keep hammering politely but forcefully. Show everyone who is more Presidential. The McNut is cracking over McAmnesty. How can he handle the WOT if he can't handles this?

It is nice to support the candidate of ideas over the candidate of venemous words.

Update Ryan Sager and TNS have uploaded the audio here:
John McCain Ad Hominem Attack on Romney

The New York Sun reports that McCain apparenly said the following on a recent bloggers call:
"Maybe I should a couple weeks and see if it changes," Mr. McCain said of Mr. Romney's position on immigration this week. "Maybe he can get out his small varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his yard."
Sounds a bit nervous to me. And really a rather low quip.
