People who donated $420,690 to his presidential campaign have given no less than $2.72 million in support of Proposition 8. We could find no donations to Romney for president from people who oppose the initiative.

I'm a big Romney supporter who doesn't support Prop 8. It's one of the few issues on which Mitt and I do not agree. I see all kinds of problems with Prop 8. Let's focus on solving problems that are far more important, like fixing our economy.

I'm all for prop 8... it's vital to preserve marriage for future generations yet unborn.

For those who haven't yet, please join our defense of traditional marriage at http://calmarriagedefense.blogspot.com/

This is an EXTREMELY important issue. I am convinced that no less than the future of religious freedom in our country is at stake here, along with the future of American families. What is more important than freedom? If prop 8 fails, I am certain that it will lead to an irreparable loss of religious freedom and will result in even further deterioration of the strength of families and further lessening of cultural standards, etc. This will in turn further erode the economy and overall quality of life. The family and culture are fundamental concepts on which everything else rests. Romney is the only candidate who supported the constitutional amendment to protect traditional marriage, and the only candidate who truly recognized the importance of this issue.

This interviewer is a moron. He needs to stop playing gotcha interviewing. His bias is so vivid its blowing out his mouth.

I wish Romney wasn't hamstrung by having to represent McCain or Republicans. I wish I could hear what HE thinks, because it just seems like he's staying on (someone else's) message. He's being a good soldier, but I wish he would break rank a little (to mix my metaphors).

publicola,

Agreed.

Also, the interviewer just called Romney "Senator Romney". Good work

After watching McCain and Palin seemingly stumble in questions about the economy, it's both good and bad to see Romney talk about it. Until them, he actually knows what he talks about and conveys knowledge. Unfortunately, he's not on the ticket. I really hope he runs again in 2012.

I suspect he'll have learned his father's lesson about taking a Cabinet post from a rival, but, it is such a disappointment to see Mitt in the role of reciting talking points when he has so much to offer at a time like this. I just can't believe that the electoral process always or even often gets it right. McCain gets what he deserves for doing the Rovian thing with this VP pick.

P.S. I want to make sure everyone knows when I knock Palin in these posts these are my opinions, not anyone else here at MMM. So don't worry too much. Also, Palin is better than Biden, but I think in the same way a headache is better than catching Mono.

Unfortunately, I think this is really just a problem of not articulating the reasons very well. I actually agree with the premise. Which is, having a shared border with Canada and close proximity with Russia requires Alaska state officials to constantly understand the relationship of their territory to international law. Whether this be related to development of natural resources whether they be bordering with Canada or off shore or sensitivity to communities with transnational identities, Alaska's position geographically permeates considerations in their laws and regulations. It shouldn't be hard to come up with a few examples of this. Those are the issues a Governor in Alaska has to think about, much the way that a Governor in a border state must think about. Does it mean she has worked for the state department, no. Does it mean she has met more foreign leaders than anyone else, no. But name the negotiations with foreign leaders Obama has participated in.

John McCain is an idiot. Is it still too late to kick him to the curb and insert Romney into the mix? His first mistake was becoming bash Romney buddies with Huckabee. His second mistake was not choosing Mitt Romz for VP. His third mistake is standing on stage for a debate with Obama. Being a P.O.W. and living in impoverished conditions withered away his brain cells and neural connections. Studies show impoverished conditions wither away neural connections in rats. Why wouldn't it do the same to humans? I'm praying this isn't true! Suspending his campaign? What kind of political stunt is this impoverished rat trying to achieve? His presidential campaign is his jet and I'm afraid he is gonna be shot down, again.

The stupid thing here is that Gov Palin would even agree to talk to Katie Couric, or charles Gibson, or any other MSM hack who is no more than an "offshoot" of the Obama campaign. Can anyone go back and see if any MSM asked Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter the same question? Or for that matter, Ronald Reagan or John Kennedy? It's JUDGEMENT that counts!

There are many of us who agree with you. Palin should take herself off the ticket. Now is a good time to do it and enter Romney with the economic uncertainty and prior to the debate.

Timotheus....in answer to your question about Obama. Yes, he did meet with the leaders of Iraq on his famous European tour. In that meeting, he tried to undermine our own government and our brave military men and women by encouraging the Iraqi govt. to delay a troop withdrawal agreement until after the presidential elections! See this article: http://www.investors.com/editorial/editorialcontent.asp?secid=1501&status=article&id=306456935180750

And as for all the others who commented here.....Palin is a great pick. She will always do what is best for the American people. Romney would have been an excellent pick too, but he is not who McCain chose---and is that a big suprise? The only reason I am excited about voting for MCain now is because of Palin. I think the McCain camp is trying to make her sound more like him, which will be their biggest mistake. How can you be interviewed by sharks like Couric and Gibson if you can't be yourself. I think that was the biggest problem here. MCCAIN SHOULD LET SARAH LOOSE AND LET HER BE HERSELF! Then you will see a different kind of interview!

Obama is a nightmare for freedom loving Americans. McCain is a headache. Biden is a major migraine. Palin is the only bright spot out there right now. Too bad we are so thin on decent leadership.

And I am not talking about Couric, I am talking about Palin.

Yeah, I get the fact that Couric was asking Gotcha questions and did a bit of a cut and paste job on the interview. But did Palin expect anything less?

I was initially happy with McCain's pick for VP, but I gotta be honest, this isn't anything to be proud of. I mean, are we really trading intelligence and coherence for excellent hunting skills and a good outside shot?

I have read several comments and posts about Palin being the best positioned for 2012. If this is the future of the Republican party, we will certainly long for the days of the academic prowess of George W. Bush.

Jason-

You're probably being a bit overly critical here. I think that she was calm & cool in the interview. She was a bit slow in responses during the walking part of the interview, but still her answers were genuine.

I don't think this interview will hurt her the slightest bit. It might even endeer her to some people.

Jason-

And one other thing, have you seen anything that Biden has said recently?

If so, then you should know that we have nothing to worry about.

I really think McCain is increasingly regretting he choose Palin.
He is going to regret it even more if she is the VP for 4 years if he wins.
I can't imagine her being the Republican nominee in 2012.
I feel sorry for her, but it's obvious McCain doesn't trust her.

I really don't feel good about the coming election no matter which side wins.

I love Mitt also but gee whiz! If it were that bad I think the media would have her by now. I am going to stop getting your emails today.

My sentiments exactly. I've tried to get on board with the choice of Palin, but the more I see of her, the more sick to my stomach I feel. How depressing.

No kidding .. this was pathetic; painful to watch. When someone makes Couric look like a Rhodes Scholar -- you've gotta wonder -- ".. he's a Maverick .." besides using the same example that Katie has already mentioned, that's the only thing she can come up with?? And her always just repeating her own exact words over and over when asked for an answer with more depth. This is just embarassing. If she can't even make a good showing with Katie, how is she going to look with Biden .. or Clinton .. whoever it might be at the time of the VP Debates. No wonder McCain is trying to severely limit the scope of the VP Debate. When are both of these loser nominees going to get a VP that actually can make their party look good .. oh that's right .. they're Senators .. all about #1; gotta pick someone that is so bad that they make themselves look good. Never liked Palin for this level of office, particularly not now. Has anyone noticed how much McCain has aged in just the last few months? The last couple of press conferences of his -- he looks like he could be in his 80's. sigh.

Maybe she needed her basketball hightops on to be quick on her feet. She certainly wasn't moving very quickly in high heels. Couric ate her alive and she looked terrible. Doesn't necessarily change the fact that she has a record of doing the right thing for the people she serves. Just a tough, gotcha interview from a pro-Obama, anti-Palin journalist. Anyone can structure an interview with questions which they know will be tough to answer. McCain still the best candidate for this election and Romney still the best for 2012. I don't think Palin will run for President.

Zues,

I am not sure if "genuine" automatically translates into "qualified". If this was a race for "best friend" perhaps. But we need something in addition to genuine, such as articulate and knowledgeable.

McCain always stated his top criteria in choosing a running mate was that the person would be capable and ready to take over as POTUS if needed. Once again, we see McCain getting a wild hair and just doing WHATEVER TO TRY TO GET ELECTED. I’m so disgusted with all the nominees for this election. What a joke! Jason, you said it so well: “are we really trading intelligence and coherence for excellent hunting skills and a good outside shot?” Well, apparently so!

Jason-

Once again, I don't think this interview is anywhere near as dire as what you're making it out to be. She didn't just give answers to give answers. She didn't pretend like she knew the answers to questions to which she wouldn't know the answers.

The problem isn't necessarily hers. It is McCain's. From the second that I knew she was going to be the Vice Presidential nominee, I said that she has a very short learning curve. I also thought that it was very risky, although it could prove to be a very good move.

Her learning curve for the national stage could prove to be the shortest in history. But even Romney sounded way better as his campaign went on. His first speeches were very bland & with time he did a lot to perfect his delivery. That's just how campaigns go.

Palin isn't afforded that time to work through things. It's also a lot harder when you're talking on someone else's behalf & not for yourself. McCain's campaign manager could endlessly reveal every McCain position on every issue with pinpoint accuracy. As could many of his longtime supporters, but they have been with McCain for at least 8 years & some of them since he got to the Senate.

I don't support Palin any less as the VP because of this interview. And she really didn't make any major mistakes in it either. Not like Biden who just this week said that they wouldn't support new clean coal plants in the US (exactly the opposite of Obama's position) or Biden who also said that he thought Obama's 'McCain doesn't use a computer ad' was "terrible."

Palin is at least staying on message. And she will definitely grow as a candidate. Plus, the media isn't flipping out about her performance with Couric, so I see no need to either.

She will not know everything about every single vote that McCain has taken. And I'm sure that Obama's campaign hasn't even finished with their sifting through McCain's 24 years of votes either.

Palin would have to do a lot more than this video, which isn't even a negative in my mind, for me to jump ship.

Zues,

Learning curves happen, but I don't know if they are a good reason to pick a running mate who is less than qualified.

In my opinion, the bottom line at some point needs to be looked at. And he bottom line is with 60 some odd days left till voting day our VP is not ready for prime time.

Saying she is not as bad as Biden is like saying she only has to suck a little less. It's not encouraging news.

I liked Palin a lot, even a year ago I touted her as a good pick for Mitt's possible VP choice, but as I have seen her in action she just isn't VP material. Perhaps in 4 or 8 years.

Jason,

She will be a great VP because at the sharp point of her focus is what is best for the American People. She ALWAYS comes back to that. Quizzing her on John McCain's voting record and past Senatorial decisions is trying to cause a "gotcha" moment but does not show what she is really made of, nor does it show that she is not ready to LEAD.

She is smart and knows how to make things happen for the good of the people. She has proven this in Alaska---that she is a LEADER, and will do what is best for the American people. There will be tons of advisors and cabinet members and other experts to help McCain and Palin on tough decisions and in areas where they are not well versed---but it will be the overriding philosophy of Sarah (and McCain) that will guide this country. What we elect as President is a LEADER, not an encyclopedia.

On second and third viewing she actually seems very very good!!! As a new Yorker I think I understand now that the problem the east and west coast intelligeencia is having on initial listen is the accent. The substance is excellent - as is the actual language - her sentences. You are wrong ye critics. Wrong.

To many conservative elites are laughing at her and she is making voters genuinely nervous. I think she will continue to pull the ticket down.

Yeah I think you're just wrong here. I liked her more after the interview. You're just used to Romney-like competence, I don't know if you realized, but that type of intelligence and mastery of the facts doesn't come along every day. Obama talks gibberish, Biden epitomizes gibberish, McCain is barely holding on to lucidity and the facts. Palin is a novice, but has executive experience and her heart is definitely in the right place.

The country sure could use Mitt Romney and his expertise to get us out of this mess.

It's really sad that it's too late to get Romney this cycle.

I really hope both sides of the isle get smart real soon and use the wise people in America, like Romney, to work on this problem.

How I wish Mitt were the nominee. I trust his analysis of the problem and know he would be able to steer us through this mess. I hope he stays visible and tells it like it is without worrying about rallying around the party line. People will remember him with gratitude if he does.

I agree 100%.
This would be a great opportunity to keep Mitt's name out there, and then a great chance to win in 2012 if Obama is elected, or if McCain only goes one term (very likely).

However, the economic situation is so bad, it may be difficult even for the Governor. The only bad thing that could happen is that if something goes wrong, the Liberals use it against him.

Governor Romney is a smart man though, he'll make the right choice one way or the other.

Romney has enormous experience in
financial markets. He created his own financial company and built it into a multimillion dollar operation. He understands how they work, what went wrong, and what needs to be done to fix the situation and see that it doesn't happen again. Time and again he has turned around badly managed companies and the Winter Olympics into profitable healthy operations.

I can't think of a more prepared
individual that has the knowledge
and experience to get us out of this mess.

It's too bad that people get blind-sided by religion, "flip-flops" hair styles, and don't focus on the
truly important factors i.e. experience and integrity.

I voted for Mitt in the Primaries and all I got was this Hockey Mom

"ROMNEY: By the way, I think John McCain is right to say, look, if the Federal Reserve steps in or the Treasury steps in rather and keeps a bank from going bankrupt, we better not watch this CEO pay himself a $10 million bonus and so we're going to limit how much these guys can take out of these banks because we're not saving it for them."

This is awful! Those guys are under contract! As Dave Ramsey said, they have a right to be paid under the contract according to the rule of law. What a politically motivated thing to say that's so far from being the most important issue of this debate! What's a few million when we're talking almost a trillion dollars of bailout and government debt?

This government takeover is the move of a government tilting toward socialism/communism as a result of people's fear of economic hardship. Roosevelt did the same thing to justify his socialist New Deal program.

I can't believe Romney would be for a government takeover like this, unless it's because doing otherwise would force him to oppose McCain, which he really doesn't want to do.
Romney's clearly not a true blue capitalist or economic conservative if he talks like he did on the Glenn Beck show. Mostly all the conservative talk show hosts have been opposed to this from the start, and the fact that Romney's not opposed to this government takeover shows a huge disconnect between him and card carrying conservatives.

Romney's comments are a betrayal to free market capitalism.

McCain gave a shout out to Romney in remarks about the Wall Street bailout plan. This is the appeal of Romney in many ways. While Democrats like to paint him as corporate raider, when the economy really is tanking, competence in economic matters is more important than silly rhetoric.

romney for TP

www.mccainpalin.blogspot.com

If John McCain wants to assure the voters that he would be the best to fix the economy, he should announce that Mitt Romney would be appointed the highest economic post in a McCain administration and campaign in the Battleground states with him. Mitt Romney is the only republican that was really a threat to the Dem's in the early days of the primaries, since they knew that the economy is going to be the Number 1 issue in this election, and Romney was the only one with the experience record, and credibility to turn things around building a strong economy.

So, if McCain wants to bring confidence to the campaign and assure the American people that unlike Obama, he will actually CHANGE the current status and bring reform to America, Mitt Romney is the Game changer, Romney will do a terrific job in defending Mccain as he is doing in the media since he endorsed Mccain, assuring the People that a Mccain administration will fix this crisis build a better economy and bring a better future to this country we so love.

I haven't seen any Romney quotes on the proposed bail-out. McCain has offered Romney's name and Michael Bloomberg's and Warren Buffet's as potential executives to oversee the plan.

That being said, Romney had a saying in the primary that I thought was spot on: "When Republicans act like Democrats, everybody loses." I can't help but think that the bail-out is exactly the kind of thing that Romney was talking about.

President Bush, for all the credit he gets for tax cuts, deserves some serious blame for previously expanding the budget more than LBJ and now proposing the largest socialization this country has seen since FDR. He has turned his back on the free market and the principles of prosperity that underly it. If that is not acting like a Democrat, I don't know what is. The ultimate consequence, as our man Mitt said so succinctly, is that everyone is going to lose.

Businesses will lose by not being punished for their bad behavior (i.e. lending with no prospect of being repaid) and not learning the lessons from their bad behavior. Taxpayers will lose because all we are taking on is debt, with no prospect of a profitable (or likely any) return. The government will lose because the additional debt could (and I think likely will) swamp the solvency of the government itself, destroying the value of the dollar and preventing the government from getting loans (even from such predators as China) to cover its own debts. All this will lead to the problem becoming not just a financial sector and housing problem, but to being a broader crisis of all Americans AND its government, too.

In short, everyone loses, all because Republicans and other defenders of market principles don't have the courage to say that the market can and will correct the problem, which it is doing right now by punishing those institutions and homeowners who were reckless. Republicans should know better than proposing such an anti-market plan. The bail-out will not just lead to socialism, it is socialism. It is government at its worst, fighting against the market to impose its own idea of economics. It's the type of thing we have come to expect from Democrats. Now that Republicans have taken on a similar tactic, we will all lose.

Bill Dew is running for Utah's 2nd Congressional district against Democrat incumbent Jim Matheson. Find out more about Bill at http://www.billdew.com/

Mitt Romney Endorses Bill Dew for Congress

Boston, MA – Today, Mitt Romney endorsed Bill Dew, Republican candidate for the 2nd Congressional District.

“I’m proud to endorse Bill Dew for Congress. He’ll fight for the people of Utah by promoting policies that will strengthen our economy, keep taxes low and help us to achieve the goal of energy independence,” said Romney. “Bill Dew’s successful background as a business leader will give him a unique perspective as our nation confronts a new generation of challenges.”

Bill Dew was pleased to receive the endorsement. “At this critical time when our economy is crippled by the credit crisis and high energy costs, I am honored to have Mitt Romney’s support and endorsement. We agree on what is needed to fix Washington and Wall Street,” said Bill Dew. “Mitt Romney knows what it takes to turn around a problem, having done it here in Salt Lake and in Massachusetts, and he knows what it will take in Washington.”

Mitt Romney, a former Republican candidate for president, served as Governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. Prior to that, he led the 2002 Winter Olympics as the head of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. A graduate of Brigham Young University, he and his wife, Ann, have a home in Park City, Utah.

Currently, Romney is Honorary Chairman of the Free and Strong America PAC, which supports officeholders and candidates who are dedicated to advancing social, fiscal and foreign policies that will strengthen America.

“America is at a turning point,” said Romney. “We need conservative leadership in Washington that believes in the principles of family, patriotism and freedom that have helped guide and build our nation. I know that Bill Dew will take the lead in protecting and defending those values.”

(full disclosure, I'm helping with Bill Dew communication efforts)

Governor Mitt Romney, former Republican presidential candidate, today announced he will campaign in two Idaho cities Oct. 1 in support of Jim Risch, candidate for U.S. Senate.

"Jim and I were governors together, and I have seen how hard he works for Idaho" Romney, honorary chairman of the Free and Strong America PAC, said in a press release.

"I look forward to returning to Idaho in support of my good friend. Jim and I stand together on many issues including the economy, lowering taxes and protecting family values. I am grateful for the support I have found in Idaho, and I know that there is not a better man than Jim Risch to serve in the U.S. Senate," Romney said.

Romney will appear at a 12:30 p.m. fundraising lunch in Boise, location to be determined. He will then travel to Idaho Falls to address a 5 p.m. roundtable of business leaders at Riverbend Ranch, followed by a rally that is free and open to the general public. link
