In the face of McCain's accusations of flip-flopping on immigration, Mitt Romney today opted for the roll-your-eyes-and-chuckle instead of the counterpunch. Speaking briefly with reporters in Dallas this afternoon, Romney responded with a laugh to McCain's "shoot the Guatemalans off his lawn" potshot -- which McCain liked enough to repeat to television cameras again last night in Oklahoma City."I guess it just shows that, even when he's wrong, he's amusing," Romney replied. He went on to defend himself against charges that he's inconsistent on immigration, ticking off the tough-on-illegals policies he promoted as Massachusetts governor. But he noticeably deferred when the press fished for a direct critique of the compromise bill hobbled together by the President and Congress earlier this week. "I'm not in the position to make that call today."

Good job Mitt! Although I would have preferred a joke that used dentures and mashed carrots.

His reply concerning McCains insult is a classic response from the Reagan book of rhetoric.

You never castigate your opponents. Only humbly respond "Well, there he goes again" without any clear attacks on his character.

Well executed Mitt. That will go a long way to increasing his popularity. While the media and people love the Springer-esque moments in political forums, it usually ends up hurting a candidates electability. Sure people are entertained with the battle of insults, but when it is time to vote, people want a statesmen, not an egocentric jerk.

I wanted a fiercer response, but laughing off these things is more mature and usually plays better with the voters.
