You don't try to win straw polls as proof of your national success among a group of voters. You don't try to win straw polls as proof of momentum. You don't try to win straw polls as solid proof of your chances at victory.

You DO try to win straw polls to gain free press to accomplish all three of the above. In other words: straw polls are a means to an ends and not the end itself.

Want proof? While blog readers wallow in the odd configuration and minutia of the FRC straw poll, the rest of the country sees this:

THANK YOU for posting this, Justin.

I am so tired of people trying to explain away Mitt's win after win after win.

He WINS because he realizes organization is everything. He knows he lacks the name recognition and major wins like this are effective in boosting his MSM cred.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent post! Thanks for putting this in perspective for us blog junkies!

Awesome post you have there Justin. I love all the images.

Great job!

I think this post has merit. Mitt won the poll and no one should take that away from him. That said, the showing for Huckabee was the real news, in my opinion, as it represents a stumbling block to evangelical leadership that appeared poised to pull the trigger for Romney in a unified swoop and now may be persuaded to reconsider. I also agree with Laura Ingraham's recent sentiments that the party must unite now or never. If SoCons get behind Huck, the party remains fractious and Rudy gets the nomination. Huck simply won't pull enough Republican voters who prioritize fiscal and military strength over social values. The reality is that only Romney or Thompson, or *gasp* McCain have a prayer at uniting all 3 factions of the party. If we go with Rudy, SoCons defect. We go with Huck, fiscons defect. If we go with Romney, we can win if SoCons overlook the "Mormon" issue. IF we go to Thompson, we may win with fiscons overlooking the "lazy" factor. My money is on Mitt. But something has to change. For starters, I agree with Ingraham in that these candidates MUST hit Rudy harder for the SoCon that he is and simultaneously beat him on the fiscal and military score. I think Romney is the only one who can do this, and I HOPE he is both prepared to do so in tonight's debate AND pulls it off. All eyes on Fox at 8 p.m.

Oh, and another thing . . . I'm also now in the camp that believes Mitt, not necessarely immediately, but sooner rather than later, will need to give the "Mormon" speech in order to solidify the SoCon movement under him and unite the party. I didn't think the FRC conference was the place to do it, but after seeing the turnout for Huckabee in the straw poll, I am not so sure that an opportunity wasn't missed.

Speech should not try to make Mitt to "fit in" with evangelical theological beliefs, even though Mormonism and evangelicals share some basic Christian beliefs. Rather, the speech should openly address that he is a Mormon and by definition theologically different from most evangelicals, but that he shares their basic values to a T and has dedicated his life to living them. Then say that as he does not base his candidacy on divergent theology, but rather on shared values, he will not address his theological, doctrinal beliefs on the trail and will never seek to impose them on anyone . . . Speak candidly to his past positions in MA quite candidly and then boldly promise to take up the social values cause and promise not to let the movement down when push comes to shove. Remind the party that all 3 factions must unite to claim victory and that he is willing to represent all 3 factions without flinching . . . I think if he does this he will succeed in quelling the anxiety and reservations that many evangelicals still have about endorsing him. If Mitt were already in the "inevitability" seat as the nominee, I would recommend he wait until the general to give the "Mormon speech." As things stand today, I believe he must give the speech in order to clear the evangelical hurdle to his nomination. Otherwise, hello Giuliani and goodbye Whitehouse.

Justin, This is great and it's a testament to what I have been finding all over the blogosphere this morning -- in conservative blogs, Politico, and alot of the MSM websites.

Mitt has a big advantage over the other candidates -- his ability to put a successful plan together and then slowly, but surely and methodically work the plan.

You know the saying - people don't plan to fail, they just fail to plan.

Well, not Mitt and his opponents hate him for it.

Any of the candidates could have had their supporters vote online in the straw poll.

I actually didn't hear it from Mitt's official campaign, I heard it from Evangelicals For Mitt and here - I was reminded over and over again until I finally voted.

Mitt's solid grassroots organization is what is going to win this nomination!

It's great to be with a winner!

Kudos to Mike Huckabee who gave an excellent speech and was able to win the local straw poll. Congrats to Mitt for winning the overall straw poll with online savvy.

Couple of thoughts here:
  1. Here's a quick genesis of how things happened from the Romney side of things. Over a week ago the Romney camp caught wind that over 1000 people had already voted in the straw poll. I guess Romney can count better than the other candidates (j/k) and quickly realized that this thing was going to be won online. In short: if 2500 people were attending the straw poll and 1000 people had already voted... anyone who didn't make an online showing would lose. They called up supporters and asked them to email their personal lists about the opportunity. We held the news from our blogs until Thursday night so as not to tip the other candidates (who apparently didn't put 2 and 2 together - again j/k) and the race was off.

  2. 600 attendees actually voted online.... so the 952 votes is misleading. I'm not saying Romney won... but the seeming on-site rout for Huckabee needs a little context.

  3. The big losers as Erick and Politico point out are Fred and Rudy. The former came in behind Romney and the later came in second. Second, that is, in the least acceptable candidate group.

  4. Talking to numerous people at the convention... the flurry of Romney endorsements didn 'tnot go unnoticed. Many people came up to me asking numerous questions about Mitt. At one point a prominent radio host asked me to come over and explain where Mitt stands on stem cell research to another fellow news maker.

  5. Here's a better contextual look at why Huckabee is a great guy... but won't be able to make it happen:

  6. (note: legend got cut off on the graphic. All you need to know is this. Huckabee is the small almost non-existent line at the bottom of the graph.

What the heck is Huckabee saying???? If you don’t vote for him, because he is authentic, then Faith as we know it is destroyed???? If that is his rationale for running, then I think Huckabee has a few screws loose!!!

http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/1007/The_Values_Voter_straw_poll.html

Huckabee took a more fiery approach. After talking about protecting freedom and family, Huckabee said: “Faith is also threatened, and let me share with you how. I believe that there are many who will seek our support. But let me say that it’s important that people sing from their hearts, and don’t merely lip-synch the lyrics to our songs. I think it’s important that the language of Zion is a mother tongue, and not a recently acquired second language. It’s important that a person doesn’t have more positions on issues that Elvis had waist sizes.”

Thanks for the inside scoop on how this came about. Facinating, but not surprising that Mitt's team would pick up on the early signals of how this would go down and mobilize effectively to meet the challenge.

Charles Mitchell over at Evangelicals for Mitt also has some interesting insight here.

http://www.evangelicalsformitt.org/front_page/you_guys_dont_get_it.php

What I thought most interesting about Charles' input is the fact that people weren't able to vote after mitt's speach because the voting booths were already closed for the night, wereas huckabee spoke early the next day and people were able to vote immediately after. I won't try to predict what the outcome might have been if people had voted after mitt but before huckabee spoke, but the energy present coming away from a good speach is powerfull, and after a night sleeping, people fall back into wait and see mode. And people seemed to realy like MR speach, so likely many would have voted for him that didn't if they were able to immediately following his speach.

From Marc Ambinder:

Young Republican convention organizer Brian Graham defended the straw poll against the accuastions it was rigged for Mitt Romney.
Graham, a Romney supporter, sent key Young Republican officials this e-mail, which this column has obtained.

Some folks have gone on to some blogs to try to make our convention look bad. They are complaining about non-YRs voting in the Straw Poll. You will see the issues addressed below. I ask that none of you speak with the Media, instead send them to Jon Woodard to handle.

1. All attendees who purchased meal tickets were allowed to vote in the Straw Poll.

2. The dinner event alone included YR delegates to the convention, YR alternates to the convention, YR guests of the convention, numerous Florida and Broward County YRs, members of the YR Alumni Network, members of the local senior Republican Party, and whomever purchased meal tickets online via the YRNC 2007 website.

3. At the highest point in the convention, there were a total of 600 attendees.

4. There were a total of 366 votes cast in the Straw Poll.

5. The Broward County Supervisor of Elections conducted the Straw Poll.

6. YRNC 2007 never claimed the Straw Poll was open only for delegates/alternates to the convention. It was always made clear that anyone who was registered or purchased meal tickets could vote in the straw poll.

7. All presidential campaigns were aware of the Straw Poll policy prior to the convention and none had voiced opposition to the policy.

8. The convention committee has members who support various Presidential
campaigns.

9. The convention was sponsored by several Presidential candidates
including Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter, and Rudy Giuliani.

And finally:
10. Straw Polls are intended to be fun, not to be scientific.

Update - Jennifer Rubin at Human Events defends Romney's win:
The straw poll results showed Romney the overwhelming winner but Thompson supporters soon groused that -- horrors -- the event had been packed with Romney supporters and even non-YR members were allowed to vote. This organizational finesse of course is how straw polls are won and should serve as a warning to the Thompson team as they head from testing to running. Romney’s organization is running on all cylinders and has learned the basics of running an event, corralling its supporters and tabulating a win. Enthusiasm without organization does not win elections.

I sort of have to do a double take, I mean, are they really trying to explain away Romney's win by saying that the event was packed with Romney supporters? lol... isn't that what the results tell us? Are they actually arguing that Romney's vote tally wasn't impressive because most people wanted to vote for him? That's some rather bizarre spin control there. If Fred lost to Hillary in a general election, would he say her win wasn't impressive because the country was packed with Hillary supporters?

I can just see John Kerry crying aloud "But Bush bused people to the polls in Ohio in 2004!" I didn't do anything so I should win.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 9, 2007 at 7:21 PM

Fred Thompson was shocked that there were so many of the 600 young individuals supporting Romney. In other news, Floridians were shocked that there are 600 young individuals. Okay, okay, sorry... cheesy Florida joke.

This whinning really is getting tiresome. Decrying the CPAC straw polls, the SC and IA contries' Repulican convention votes, and now this. I am missing a few. I will be totally surprised if we see the same whinings after Ames - NOT! They will claim that because Rudy and McCain did not show up, the polls are worthless. I'm sorry, but those people, bussed or not, are voters, and their being there at conventions shows their dedication and commitment. You want to have them in your grassroot organizations, as they will make a whole lot of difference in who win the state primaries! Too bad those whiners did not grab up those voters.

It's been about 70 days since the Romney campaign came together. I have a few adjectives to describe this effort: whirlwind, lightning round, dizzing. My wife would have a few different adjectives to describe it: husband steeling... j/k

Inside Romney reports indicate that the recent Romney barnstorming through New Hampshire, Iowa, South Carolina and Florida is bringing out out the crowds in support of the Governor:
  • Blizzards in NH didn't stop 150 people from attending a Sunapee event last week
  • 400+ people crowded a Coraville, IA lunch on Friday
  • 11 more Florida State Legislators and a FL Cabinet member threw their weight behind Romney
But the real news is all hay... as in straw polls, particularly in South Carolina. 17 Counties held county conventions. Romney won 10 of them and was the only candidate to win, place or show in every poll.

The details behind these efforts are even more striking. For example, Greenville County (the most GOP-leaning state in SC) Romney walked away with 30% of the vote.

Hotline is reporting that Mitt has canceled a fundraiser in Virginia scheduled for tomorrow out of respect for the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings.

Hotline also has a take on Romney's straw poll wins in Horry, York, and Orangeburg Co.'s in South Carolina (a follow-up to the report here).
