The Hotline Blog reports:

"The Hotline confirms a Fox News report that ex-NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani will file a statement of candidacy with the FEC today. He'll run as a Republican"

All I can say is... it's about time!

Sorry for the forward thinking when we haven't even won the nomination yet, but I wanted to opine on one potential running mate. I also don't want to sound disrespectful of his chances of capturing the nomination. I think he has a very legitimate shot at it. What I want to suggest is that a Romney-Giuliani ticket would be a very powerful ticket to run.

Giuliani is the perfect ticket balancer for Mitt. He is much less conservative than Mitt. For people who want to see a balance in the White House, Giuliani provides it. Giuliani is also a very popular and well known person. To the extent that Vice President is a figurehead position, Giuliani is ideal. Hey, he's a national hero.

But I also think Giuliani is good because he is strong on the war on terror and on criminal justice issues. I think he would be a good asset to Romney as they try and solve problems on a national level that really require city and state action. Their respective experience would give me a lot of confidence that all was being done to protect our country.

What does this mean for us? I would suggest that we should think about this as the campaign unfolds. Giuliani is who he is. He's not particularly conservative on social issues, but he's not pretending to be. You get what you get with Giuliani; an all around good guy with lots of executive experience who I am proud to have as a part of the party, even if I am much more conservative than he is. For that reason, you won't hear me talk much more about him, I would suspect. But when I do, I guess I am just pointing out that I wouldn't mind having him in the White House (with Mitt, of course).

Dick Morris thinks a second stringer will emerge (he is probably hoping it is Huckabee which probably the strongest second stringer). I don't think that will happen. I think Rudy and Mitt are very fast on their feet and can adapt lightning quick to various potential trip-ups which will be very high due to the unusual length of the campaign. Those campaigners who have to consult with other before acting are going to be at a huge disadvantage. This is going to hurt McCain, Huckabee, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards. Rudy will benefit from this long election cycle. Mitt of course will benefit too. And on the Democrat side Obama will excel.
